View Full Version : SweetFX (via GemFx) for Windows 8.1 64-bit (ReShade alternative)

So far, most graphics-savvy users have utilized the beta injector called "ReShade" and via that apply SweetFX effects like sharpening, vibrancy etc' on Pcars, which is both 32/64-bit application. Old ways of injecting SFX do not work under Win 8.1.

Unfortunately, there's a bug in ReShade causing a consistent crash with PCARS, rendering it useless.

So I really got fed up with this and sought to find a solution and right under my nose it was!

Anyone heard of "GEMFX"?

Apparently, that's one of the top results on google for "sweetfx alternative".

Someone created their own injector (similar to ReShade) and extended it with SweetFX! upon quick inspection, it's much more developed than ReShade and guess what? no crash!

Check it out here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?672484-Generic-GEMFX-Version-1-0-8

You download the thing and there's an installation wizard, you just point it to pcars installation dir. It's recommended to remove your Reshade/Sweetfx bundle first, because it's also injecting through d3d9, dxgi, d3d11. You'll notice it's a hefty file (200mb), that's because the author created an elaborate UI to configure everything, you don't have to copy-paste stuff. I noticed it's also updating on-the-fly like Reshade does! and best of all DOES NOT CRASH. Well from the few quick tests that I made it seems to work consistently, whereas Reshade would crash EVERY time. Edit: used it now for more than 2 hours, coming in and out of sessions, few online sessions and booting/exiting the game without issues *knock on wood*.

To use GEMFX with SFX, start the program, enable whatever SFX features you like and make sure to check "64Bit Application". Play around with the other options.. for myself I set the 'Basic Shader' settings to "No GEM Shader" to make sure it doesn't add extra effects.

* Mind it injects SFX 1.5.1 and not the newer SFX 2.0, but that doesn't really matter. Preset for SFX 2.0 may appear extreme under 1.5.1 so adjust accordingly and as necessary.

You can save this tweaking by starting out with my preset: 200997
Edit: updated my preset, so re-download. It now excludes vibrance and has better sharpen settings.

It enables the following effects (fine tuned by me):
1. Luma Sharpen
2. Vibrance
3. Dither

Installation:
1. Go to:
<X>:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\pCars\GEMFX\Presets\current
2. Copy-paste.
3. Enjoy

Just a sample from one of my favorite scenarios ever, which is the Caterham S300 in Dubai @ 7am & overcast weather, beastly immersion with trackir. ;)

That's exactly right. Reshade has some faulty code in it's directx api calls and it's halting the game. Really annoying and Reshade developers seem reluctant to fix it, unfortunately.

I would love if someone could get SweetFX/ReShade working in pCARS (just like the old Win7 days) with Win 8.1. Please post here if you have something working and stable.

The crash you guys are talking about, does it happen at loading screens?

So, I thought to try this ReShade someone made for GTA5. It does work, but it crashes at loading screens at random. I did complete a whole track event in my GT4 career, returned to menu, but crashed when I tried entering a stand alone practice session. Is that what's happening to you guys? Man we need this fixed!

Please read first post carefully.

@TMoney: always get Reshade from their official site. Let's stay on topic. This is a sweetfx win8 solution for Cars.

@Fazer93: Win7 users already have a working solution.

As there is online, will pCars scan and ban for code injection?

I hope so, or hope it gets added as this game is client side based multiplayer and code injection is the number one route for game hacking/cheating. Not to detract from making games look better i totally am with that but this app is DLL code injection based which has a bad side.

Hmm, I wouldn't worry too much about that tbh.

Worry about what, that the game detects cheating and ignores GFX apps injecting code and will ban only genuine hacking or not worry about code injection period,as no one is gonna cheat online as they wouldn't do that, surely?

It's not really on-topic tbh. I'm certain cheaters will be dealt with should the need arise.

Thanksadi518, I've really liked Sweet FX nut lockup after every race either back to dash or any other mode. Though it looked great.

Using Reshade + SweetFX combo ATM, and sometimes the game crashes more, sometimes less.
