View Full Version : How are you finding the pit engineer?

I'm in my second season, done one and a half championships of 125cc karts, a 250cc kart race, a GT5 championship, and some Track Day events. So I've had plenty of races, along with some practice and qualifying sessions in a small variety of vehicles.

He's commented occasionally. Mainly if I've been doing great in a race "Keep this pace up, you're doing great" etc.

There's been times where I thought he'd surely say something but didn't. I've had a dry race turn wet, dry, wet, and finish in the dry. Nothing from him about the weather at all. And that was at one of the events where it says in the email that you'll have a pit engineer!

He seems useless which is disappointing and makes the engineer in Codemasters' F1 games look better which is really saying something!

Hope this can be worked on for the future as it's surprising how lacking it is, especially considering how Project Cars is a game geared towards authentic motorsport.

i agree i hope they patch him because he is essentially useless which is disappointing, i know its all on the hud but he could tell you lap times, how far you are from other drivers, and much much more but occasionally he chimes in with pointless commentary which does not add anything to the experience sadly

I have rarely heard my engineer. He was very talkative in one race at the Abu Dhabi Kartdrome in Season 1, but since then I have not heard him. About to start driving the Superkarts in Season 2.

That's exactly one of the few races where he said anything for me!

If someone could pass this suggestion on, it would be great. It can be low priority, whatever, but the engineer needs to be much better.

I would have thought that, maybe when getting feedback from guys like Nicolas Hamilton and Ben Collins himself, that they might have asked them about what engineers generally will talk to their driver about.

I could be mistaken, but the voice is Ben Collins.

It is, but he also gave a lot of feedback and insight regarding the handling.

The race engineer(aka Ben Collins) used to be quite the chatty Kathy in earlier Dev builds. Which grew tiresome and I'd turn pit engineer off. :)

I drive with all HUD's off. Nothing on my screen at all. Just my cockpit cam and my cyber hands. He should be telling me about the temp of my tyres (since I don't know), how close the guy behind me is, how close the guy in front is, telling me the wear rate of my tyres and to act accordingly (e.g slow down and save the tyres), weather updates, pit updates, what kind of laptime you need to do to catch the guy in front before the end of the race, when to pit to undercut or leap frog, competitors lap times etc.

I know this is quite detailed but honestly I was kinda expecting something along these lines given they went to the trouble of hiring the Stig. It would be really useful and authentic.

If they don't improve him at least have an option to mute him, I find it just irritating when he's like 'well done!' or something like that, lol.

A real life pit engineer isn't going to know you tire temps to report them to you so why would a virtual one?
You can turn Pit Engineer off in the Gameplay settings.

Maybe not in Karts, but F1 engeners surely have extensive info on your hardware.

Engineer is something I would expect is being worked on. With the amazing dynamic weather system in Project Cars it would be valuable and realistic if he could warn of rain coming, for instance.

Invincible
09-05-2015, 08:42
He did warn me about rain several times now. (" rain is expected in thirty minutes") and also informed me when ours going to dry up. But usually the rain warning is too late (already started to rain lightly).

Ben was hired for input regarding handling etc during game development. I think recording him as pit engineer was just as an extra 'fun' thing.

Personally I could do without the 'chat' but it is handy when you get penalties as I don't like trying to read messages while driving.

Inside the WMD we testers translated the pit engineer messages in different languages, so we saw all of them: he warns you about pretty much everything, he tells you the distance in seconds between you and the other drivers, your position, mechanical problems, penalties, pit stop problems, driving advises, car accidents, what to do after you had a big crash, and lot of other stuff.
In the beginning, as Alan said, this was very verbose, was speaking all the time, to allow the testers to find bugs and other problems. Then was tuned in a way that the more you advance in the career and the less he repeat certain messages (the basic ones designed to helps the "noobs"). It needs to be refined, give the devs some time for that guys, the messages were recorded not long time ago (it's a feature introduced recently compared to others we have), they are hundreds and it needs time to be adjusted to perfection.

On career mode I've heard him once or twice (I'm in December on my first season) so have done a fair few races. But in solo mode I have heard him more (dome done a 10 lap race which he spoke often. Still I think he needs more work for future updates to give in depth info such as the leaders lap times, split times, the car infront and behind times, weather chances and car info.

So there's a good chance we'll hear him more in future updates? If they have a lot more lines recorded, which it sounds like they do, then I really hope so.

Some F1 games in the past had an option for how often you would hear your engineer. They went something like Critical, Minimum, Medium, Maximum. Would be a good set of options to suit everyone.

Have the audio files been removed from release or can they be unlocked with a mod/ini tweak?

There should be an option where you could choose between 'chatty kathy' and "sleeping kathy'. More information would be useful especially for weather conditions

I was tinkering with brake balance and after a few laps the engineer told me my brakes were overheating. Checked the telemetry and they were. I thought it was quite cool and also taught me that having an F1 car with brake balance to 70% front at Monza is a bad idea!

Tire temps are available on the MOTEC, check your bindings to find the button for MOTEC display - change page.

Isnt the race engineer supposed to assist you setting up the car? It kind of gives that impression at the bottom of the screen, but so far I have received no help what so ever. I needed assistance driving those historic Escorts, I couldn't keep the thing on the road, but im on the pace with the formula A

In my inbox I have an email to say my engineer is analysing the data tomorrow and to come by his office to look at the reports, is there anywhere I can go to find this? I've been looking for ages and can't seem to find it.

FYI I've started from the bottom in karts on Xbox one.

I feel I don't need any engineer supposed to assist me in a game :P
Game is game where I don't need assist, I'll learn it by myself that's what I think. Don't know about others. So off all for me :D

Ha! This is another thing that works fine in my game. Using headphones the volume and type of information is fine and really adds to the game. The only time he annoyed me was on a 3 line conversation that made me move my eyes down onto the written text and I accidentally drove off the road. It was the beginning of the last race lap so the timing was horrible.

With "translated" I mean that we translated the text in different languages, from english to italian, etc.
The voice is just in english, it's Ben Collins, so we thought was a cool idea to keep his original voice. Also, there was no money for dubbing the voice in different languages.

All I want is to hear Ben and not see his speech captioned. Turn off the captions and he gives you the Stig treatment (silent). :)

I'm finding him too inconsistent and random. I want more variation also.

That's good to hear, and gives me hope that changes might be made.

Personally I think the race engineer is a fantastic addition, currently poorly implemented.

On PS4 his voice comes through the gamepad speaker, which is pretty useless if you're using a wheel or if you've got the game audio cranked up loudly as you simply cannot hear him. Having the option to hear him through the main speakers, or even better (and more appropriate), through the PS4 headset, would be a vast improvement. It would also be nice to have the option to disable the pop-up subtitles when he speaks. It's unnecessary if you can hear him.

I like having the engineer around (and would like to hear him more often) but the advice I really want from him (when to pit for tyres, when weather changes are predicted, word about overheating brakes, low fuel etc - you know, useful stuff) is pretty non-existent.

If possible I think there should also be several ways that the same information is phrased, just to keep things fresh and to avoid repetition.

Yeah I find him pretty useless too, gives wrong advice or info too late so I'm turn him off.
If he was to give better weather forecasts and be a spotter they are both useful and needed features.

It is useless. It doesn't give any information, there is no interactions and it is not in foreign language. Just disturbing, that's all.

To those on PS4, I found a solution if you have earphones and are using a controller! Don't know if steering wheels have a jack/port for earphones/headphones, if they do then this might work for steering wheels too. Hope they eventually do allow the engineer to be heard through the tv still.

Plug your earphones (or headphones with a jack) into the front of your DS4. Go to the PS4 home screen and go to the following.

Devices (towards the bottom) - Audio Devices - Output to Headphones - All Audio

In the Audio Devices menu, make sure the Output Device is set to Headphones Connected To Controller. It should change to that automatically once you have the earphones plugged in.

Doesn't this send ALL audio through the headphones though? I'd like to play with all audio coming through my surround sound amp EXCEPT for the engineer, who I'd like coming through my headset (one earcup with mic, not stereo gaming headphones), as if I'm on the radio to the pits.

Is that possible with what you suggest?

Joethe147

I don't think so as there's no option for it in-game, just to change the volume of the engineer.

So he doesn't even tell you about low fuel?

Was in a 16 lap Formula B race at Dubai, and I was only glancing at the time gap and lap number now and then. I was pretty focused, fuel didn't cross my mind. I ended up running out of fuel as I only noticed the flashing red fuel icon as I was halfway round a lap and didn't have enough to get back to the pits.

I. Was. Furious.

I sure haven't heard much out of him. Never in warmup and maybe twice in a 10-20 lap race.
All he has ever said is keep that guy behind you..then the AI wrecks me. Or catch up with the guy
in front of you. And I radio back to him and tell him, "Don't talk to me in the turns" LOL

Yeah, he comes out with a fair bit of nonsense for me - telling me I've got someone right on my tail and advising to defend when it's me that just overtaken him, expect rain in the next 30 minutes when the track already has puddles, telling me to push hard - I can do this on the final straight with a 100m gap from the leader.

But I think it's funny and find myself replying out loud to his nonsense.

I decided to turn him off.
I was doing a little 8 lap Formula Rookie race at Zolder and had just spun off. So I was backwards in the grass, standing still, about 10 meters away from the track when he told me to start defending my inside line because someone was right on my tail.

I was really hoping that the engineer would be useful and as above have found it a waste of time. It's a real shame as it could be soooooo much better.

I think he should be giving an updates on the start finish straight saying how close you are to other cars, whether you should push more, or ease off and conserve the tyres, what your fuel level is like and tyre temps etc. obviously fuel and tyre temps should not be mentioned until you start getting within 3 laps or so of an issue.

Mid lap he should tell you of anything changes in the weather, ai's close to your position crashing or pitting etc as soon as it happens.

We should also have button to press, like if you were to call the engineer yourself when you want so that he can give you and update when you want.

then in the settings you could change the frequency of when he gives you the updates, eg, every lap, 2 laps, 3 laps etc. this way you can set how often he starts on his own, but you can always call him for an update should you want some info.

My biggest problem with the race engineer is that we cant change the sex or ethnicity of "it". I expect more from a "next gen" game and expect it to keep up with the cultural and gender diversification of the industry today.

Wut? If the voice is a famous person (i.e. the Stig) you just can't have a female voice - as there is no female Stig yet. If they would have choosen Sebastian Vettel as a driving instructor, you also wouldn't want to choose to have a Sebastienne Vettel.

Gender diversity is one thing, and really appreciated. But you can't change the gender of a specific person just because someone else want to.
