Which game got you hooked into racing car games?

For me I was about 4-5 years old playing my Uncles Atari Speedway. I remember another game which I played but was moving a brick left and right around other bricks. Oh the graphics and technology we have now, but speedway I used to spend hours play IDK why it was fun back then.

The first one I can remember playing outside of arcade halls (cant remember what these were called), is Grand Prix Circuit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Circuit_%28video_game%29) from 87. And Test Drive 2 from 89.
And then the first multiplayer fun in Need for Speed II LE about 97 I think.

[EDIT] Oh, and Stunts of course - thanks qbasiz. Loads of fun building my own tracks.

Hard Drivin and Race Drivin sit down units is what really got me hooked to racing games. I did play racing games on console way before that (like pole position on the 2600) but I wasnt really into them back then.

I was about 7 or 8 years old, my parents bought me a ZX spectrum for Christmas and it came with a couple of games, one of which was 'Chequered Flag'. I spent hours playing that game on my little 14" Toshiba portable TV.

yeah hard drivin and race drivin first caused the itch. then nfs on 3do made it worse. then gran turismo and Ferrari f355. then toca and tokyo highway and enthusia. then dabbled with forza but console racing games were going in the wrong direction for me. then waited years for pcars. now im happy, lol.

However what I really want is a successor to Papyrus' Gripped (SODA Off Road, outside Europe IIRC)

Microprose Grand Prix, but on the Amiga.
It even had hotseat multiplayer, where you'd do a percentage of the race then have the AI take over for a few laps while player 2 controlled their car.

i played racing a games a lot as a kid (OutRun, Pole Position, Super Sprint, Rad Racer, IndyCar, Test Drive) but it was PGR/PGR2 on the Xbox that REALLY got me hooked... getting online in PGR2 and racing with 7 other people was awesome and met a lot of cool people that i'm still in contact with.

i consider myself more of a hybrid arcade-sim racer. i was never good enough at Forza/Gran Turismo and got bored with NFS/Midnight Club. hoping to have a lot of fun with pCars.

I started playing racing ganes on atari 2600 and in the arcade, but the gane I spent hours on was Nascar Racing on the pc. I used a game pad. It looked like a nes controller. Then I got hooked on the Forza series, the only reason I bought a Xbox One was to play Project Cars

I guess for me it was Daytona USA on the Sega Saturn. I had played a few before than but never really got into them much at all. Had a lot of fun with Daytona once I learned the expert track and how to power slide the corners for max speed around the track. So that game got me into racing games in general but the one that put it over the top was NFS Porsche Unleashed for the PC. That game actually felt much more like driving a real car than any game I had played and was quite enjoyable. That game also got me into multiplayer racing I had 4 PCs setup on a network and we would get multiplayer races going over the LAN that brought the game to a whole new level.

So Daytona first peaked my interest but Porsche Unleashed made me a fan of both racing games and of Porsche

Night Driver got me hooked in the 70s, then when I saw Pole Position - I couldn't believe how realistic it looked (little did I know). When in college in the 80s, my girlfriend's family bought a computer (mostly for her mom to store her recipes). Naturally I had to go out and buy Grand Prix Circuit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Circuit_%28video_game%29). Once I got on to consoles, it was Al Unser Jr on NES, Ayrton Senna Super GPII on Genesis, and the often forgotten Formula One World Championship: Beyond the Limit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_World_Championship:_Beyond_the_Limit).

203925

Formula One World Championship: Beyond the Limit let you play as one of the real drivers in F1. What really set the game apart was the inclusion of actual Team Principals and Engineers! As the season progressed, you'd have Eddie Jordan popping up and telling you that this week Marco Apicella would be your teammate, followed by Gary Anderson telling you about the latest updates to your car. If the real team actually changed car models mid-season, that would be reflected in the game as well - as was the case with Tyrrell changing from the 020B to the 021 - and it wasn't just in name only. The appearance of your car changed.

Excluding an assortment of racing games dating back to the Commodore 64 days, I started sim racing - and bought my first wheel - with F1 2001 mods (barely played the game in its original form, I've never been a particularly big fan of openwheelers).
Then GTR, GTR2, rFactor, GT Legends, iRacing etc.

Meanwhile I also enjoy many pure arcade racers or "simcade" racers.

My first was Night driver on my mates old Atari back in the early eighties, I played it breifly before then in the arcades. By 15 i was programming my own night driver on my Atari 800xl then getting into machine code! learned basic on most other pc's. But I can confidently say I've played all the games mentioned so far with exception to the Nascar games and the formular one games that were endorsed by f1 drivers, mainly because 8 bit graphic speed was not doing them justice.
The 3DO console had some good ones. All of the toca series, most of the Gran Tourismos, all McReas. All Forzas up to Fms4. A few pc f1 games. Most of the NFS series, 2 being my favorite, pro street a close second. Virtual Racing and PGR up to 3 on xb in fact I have a stack of xb driving games preowned from game lol

I see many reference Pole Position. My mates and me played that one to death in the arcades. Then Aviator and Revs on the BBC hinted that simulations might be a thing. Eventually I got The Need For Speed on the 3DO, and then it was clear. I guess it's that lineage that got me hooked, besides general petrolheadism which would have lead to sim racing anyway... :)

I've played racing games since the Atari 2600, but the game that got me "hooked" was the original Gran Turismo. Keep in mind, at that time that was the closest you could get to a "sim" on a console, and it blew every racing game that came before it out of the water.

From GT 1-4, then on to Forza 2-5, and now PCars, I have hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of miles driven, and I get more and more hooked on these games all the time. And I think PCars has the potential to be the best console racer ever produced, with a little more fine-tuning.

For me there is no other genre in gaming that requires the amount of skill and practice to be good at them as racing games.

As seen by my other posts here I'd played a lot of racers before then, starting with Pitstop II (which was the game that got me into racers), but Microprose F1 Grand Prix was the one that I actually took the time to learn to race without driver aids. Which wasn't easy when all I had was a digital joystick to drive it with.

I started out with Microprose F1 GP, played on the Atari ST, with a joystick stuck to a bit of wood. Loved the way you could change drivers during a race (3 of us used to drive 1 car).

After that it was straight to Grand Prix Legends on the PC, this time with a wheel (3 or 4 of them actually) and many happy years spent in a league and making simple track updates (just mip swapping). This was the one that taught me the joys of competitive online multiplayer (and how many hours you had to practice to become competitive).

I spent a little time on Rally Trohpy, LSF, N2003, GTR (which didn't like my overclocked CPU) & GTL and raced in a GTR2 league briefly, but GPL was my favourite.

I had been out of PC race sims for a while, but the announcement of pCars at the end of 2011 brought me back and that is all I have played (& needed) since.

I spend a little time on Rally Trophy on the PC (with a very cheap wheel) then moved to Grand Prix Legends on the PC with (a few different higher quality wheels & pedals). I spent many happy years spent in a league (the T.League, which had switched from TOCA 2 to GPL) and making simple track updates (just mip swapping). GPL was the game that taught me the joys of competitive online multiplayer (and how many hours you had to practice, to become competitive). There were very few big crashes in league racing, but as the crashed make good pictures, I have attached one ;)

On PC, it would be Test Drive (the first one) in glorious 4-colour CGA. There were 3 of us at school that had a PC and we kept trying to beat each other's times. After that, the driving games that stand out for me are, in no particular order :-

Car and Driver
Road and Track presents : The Need for Speed
Microprose Grand Prix (oh the joy of lapping every single car 5 times at Monaco on the highest difficulty)
Indy 500 : The Simulation
TOCA
Colin McRae Rally 2
Richard Burns Rally
Need for Speed Shift
and of course
Project CARS

There are loads and loads of others during the years, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind :)

TOCA2 on PS1. I loved many other racing games dating back to the 1980s (was amazed at how good Pitstop 2 on C64 still looks, 30 years on) but TOCA2 was the first I played with a cockpit view and so had that magical feel of being in the car. PCars is the sequel to TOCA2 that I've been waiting for since 1998.

Gran Turismo 3 got me playing a bit more serious, learning to go faster etc. Gran Turismo 5 transformed me from someone who loves racing games casually, to being serious, driving Manual with no assists, playing with set ups etc, but this had a negative effect on me, I stopped enjoying other games like NFS, GRID, F1 and DriveClub killed arcade racers for me

I know driveclub is an arcade game and that project cars is mostly a sim and so there shouldn't be that much crossover, but i went back on driveclub today and after playing project cars, it is diabolical! It's not just that it feels like its made for a toddler to play but on top of it is the much much lower fps. I actually was compelled to delete it on principle, and did so.

Going to show my age now, Powerslide; Mobil 1 Rally; Collin McRae 2 etc. from ~15 years ago! I did have Microprose(?) Grand Prix on my Amiga A500 around 1990, but I was not hooked like a drug addict. ;)

In terms of what many call "sims," it was Rfactor that got me to make the transition from the likes of TOCA Race Driver 1/2/3. I had previously bought Nascar 2003; GT Legends; GTR; GTR2; but I was so used to cars "travelling on rails" that I struggled to play them regularly for some time after my transition.

On PC it was Race The WTCC Game :D (then the entire Race 07 Series (On/STCC/Evo...) and GTR2 and a little bit of rFactor).

On PS2 my main racing game was actually F106 (not Gran Turismo 4 as much). F106 is a surprisingly great "simracer".

Then I moved on to F1 Championship Edition on PS3 which is essentially the same game. :)

Holy crap...I remember that game. Me and my brother payed the heck out of it.

The one that got me into it though was a little earlier than that though.

Night Driver was my first one, but didn't really get me into racing.

The original Test Drive took up a lot of my time as a kid.
205171

Years later I found Xpand Rally which opened my eyes to the possibility of realistic racing simulation
205174

After a long break from that (spent years on flight-sims), I tried to re-install Xpand on my new machine, but it wouldn't work. So I looked around and found F1 2011. On the Codemasters forum I heard about this thing called Project Cars, and I haven't looked back since.

Stunt Car Racer which is poorer than the above so gets no video xD

As u see, i came from the old generation with crappy computers :)
but most of my time as a kid was spent in front of my computers or the pinnacle was the 10p arcade at weekends xD a huge warehouse full of arcade machines, most of the driving ones had seats too \o/
It was a dark, dingy, dirty old building tbh :) but going into that room with black paint on walls with all the blinking & beeping was epic for a kid :)
and at only 10p a go.. we spent all day sat/sun in that place,

Then ofc came the playstation era and turismo got me hooked again i suppose.. the 1st one at the time of release was awesome and did lead the way for many years.. but for all the owners enthusiasm i feel his game has crumbled a little :( I loved that game and even got within 1.6secs of the gt academy trial.. which that kid from wales won.. but i had a broken hand :) just a couple of corners with pain free bones i may have done better :)
i think thats why i gave GT5 so much praise, its yearly run for an opportunity for someone to get a job doing what u love to do.. thats unique and much respect for turismo for setting that up with nissan..
Turismo 5 was last race game i played.. when they turned the online servers off as 6 was released :P I wont be forced anywhere !! :)

Looking at all the above tho.. really makes me think how far games have come since those early days right thro' to PCars today :)

My first one was the Pole Position and TX-1 arcade games but what actually got me hooked was the WEC Le Mans arcader with the deluxe spinny cabinet. Just about only me and a mate of mine were the only regulars who could finish it and because of the cabinet we'd usually draw a crowd.

Yes I remember Pole Position. But for me PP was "another game" Not like Race Drivin or Hard Drivin, those games were THE RACING GAMES.
But actually, what really got me hooked on the racing thing wasn't a game, It was a car race I saw on TV in the 80's , a guy who wins with the car in flames.

Always been into driving/racing games. Earliest ones included Test Drive 2, Stunts, some C64 titles, and NFS2SE.
Test Drive Unlimited 1 is what made me upgrade PC and buy my first wheel, which naturally led to me moving towards PC sims.

The original Gran Turismo, with a wheel. Also special mention to V8 Supercars 3 (TOCA 3), to date my favourite game ever. Well, maybe Project CARS might beat it.

I liked Chequered Flag on the Sinclair Spectrum, but for me it was Geoff Crammond's REVS, on the BBC Micro that got me hooked.

I've often thought it would be awesome if SMS could get his input in some way.

(I have no idea what he's up to these days BTW)

I'm also sure Ian is astute enough to have considered it and probably explored the idea, so perhaps it cannot ever happen :-(

+1! Geoff Crammond, we're not worthy!! A total god in my book! ;) Stunt Car Racer or GP4 was his last release I think. Found this via Wiki on him, an interview in 2012: http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/upload/media/scans/geoffcrammond.pdf

For me it started with Pole Position back in to day and went onto Sega Master System and Mega Drive with Sennas Super Monaco GP and GP2 then PC with F1GP then Indycar Indycar 2 the First Nascar game I remember I didn't have enough Ram to play full grid lol F1GP2 basicly played them all but the Title that got me Cemented into Sim Racing and Online Championships is the Grand Daddy GRAND PRIX LEGENDS!!! Bought my first serious FF Wheel then the Logitech Wingman FF although I did have a Madcats wheel in PS1 for NFS and GT still remember VROC and awesome battles, made my first Mods on that game made so many friends all over the world it totally launched how we play today with realism and Leagues could kinda say iRacing was born from GPL. and Played pretty much every racing title since on PC Playstation's and Xbox since.

Formula 1 96 on PS but Gran Turismo 5 is the first game that made me feel the pleasure of using a FFB Wheel (G27). Assetto Corsa made me sell my PS3 but Project CARS will probably be the one that keeps me racing for years!

Racing games in general, it was Top Gear in the snes that hooked me (I played some super sprint on the NES before, but I was too little and was terrible at it).

On the Sim side, I first got hooked by Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 2. First game in which I took the care to go around the track improving my time, changing car setups, shaving hundredths of seconds off my laps. Playing with a joystick (as in, a flight stick, which I also used to play flight simulator), too! Got involved with modding for it, as well.

Anyone here remembers GP2's manual? It actually had pointers on how to approach different types of corners, how to adjust car setups, etc. I loved that book (and it was an actual book)!

Mario kart, rock n roll racing, micro machines, road rash, cruisin' USA, Stunts, Papyrus's Nascar and Indy, need for speed, NFS Porsche unleashed and Race 07 also stand prominently in my racing history.

I only recently (one year ago) got myself a FFB wheel (T500RS) to play pcars, AC and GSCE. Had been making do with a basic vibration wheel for a few years.

Ever since chequered flag/Grand Prix on the zx spectrum.
You only had your car on track in cockpit view and just hot lapped around all the GP circuits of the time. Also Formlua one where you were the team principle and made pit stop calls for your drivers etc.

I've been playing since the days of the zx spectrum. While I have played many, the ones that REALLY hooked me were Grand Prix Legends, Swedish Touring Car Championship, and British Rally Championship.
GPL was just damn hard, you really had to focus.
STCC had superb handling.
BRC had handling and was the first game I remember to have stages that were 20+ miles.

I can honestly say that playing these games is what led me to take up Motorsport for real. I ended up doing 3 years in amateur UK tin top series. Happy days indeed!
