does the race have mandatory pit stop? depending how long the race is.

I'd generally aim for about half-way of the race, so you can run minimum fuel and thrash your tires. if tires are lasting full race length, then ye, about mid-race splash and dash.

OR, start with a heavy fuel load and avoid a pit stop, pace yourself out.

Many variables. What race/situation are you talking about?

I find the tyres wear thin and your temps will go up about 10 degrees from normal. Pick a corner you like on the track you're racing on and push the car to see how much grip you experience. If you have a moment and its near your lap count for worn tyres(you did testing right?) Then request a pit sooner or later its your call. You may have to wait for the fuel to go down, to handle crap tyres, so theres quite a few variables. Thats what I've seen, but we're all on a learning curve.
