I reinstalled Steam due to an unrelated problem. I lots my game save, then I restored it from an older backup. Now when I start the game, it asks me to pick a difficulty level again! But the save is in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[STEAM_USER_ID]\234630\local\project cars\profiles\default.sav

What is going on? I put over 10 hours into this game!

on my (german) win 8.1 i got a "program files" and a "programme (x86)" folder.
the game is installed in the programme (x86) folder, maybe you got 2 different folders to and the backup is in the wrong folder (?)

Thanks, but that is not the problem.

I can't start over now, could someone who has made some progress please send me their save?

very unwise to replace a default.sav file from another user. ;)

Over 10 hours? You poor soul, try putting in over 200 hours then losing your save that's when it really hurts :p

Using someone else's save won't change the fact you lost your save, so just start again and move on just like I did when I lost my save.
It ain't the end of the world at the end of the day.

Why?

Because it contains someone else's career progress, controller settings, car setups, FFB settings and even their name etc etc.
