As many of you probably know, the 'ring has had speed limits for many years as a safety precaution (see the green lines below). These were to protect drivers entering and exiting the road - these were rarely, if ever enforced. However, since the accident at the N24 (where the GTR landed in the crowd, killing one person and injuring others), more speed limits have been introduced. These are now being heavily enforced and even resulted in the track being red flagged for all because one person was caught doing 280 in a 250 zone. There are going to be speed limits in future races too.

Is this the death of the Nordschleife?

those are tourist limits i assume? so no, not the death of the ring as it matters -- the speed limits during races is whats ridiculous. i very much hope thats a temporary 'solution'.

At least in the German car magazine "Sport Auto" they said it is only temporarily and that the VLN is still looking for a better solution.

It was a short-term solution because there was no time prior to the 24h race to do changes to the track and/or the cars.
Personally, i hope the just get rid of that infernal spectator area at Flugplatz and leave the layout untouched.
Official statement should come from DMSB (Deutscher Motorsportbund): http://www.dmsb.de

The spectators injured were not in a spectator area, they weren't supposed to be there. Now, I wouldn't say it was their fault that someone was killed, but they were not supposed to be there.

well it was originally designed in the 1920's, a chicane was added in 1967, then changes made from 1971-1983
So that's 32 years since any changes (according to the wiki page) and cars have got pretty fast and it would take a lot of money to put tall catch fences up around that bad boy and if your gonna do something it needs to be done 100% as proven by the safer barriers at NASCAR tracks as there have been wrecks where cars hit places that were thought to be non problem areas.

It isn't.

...I don't even reach 250 km/h @ Flugplatz...finally, owning a slow car pays of!
