I know not many people purchased it plus it contributed to the downfall of a great British developer but my favourite driving game has to be Blur. I just had so much fun playing this game online I just wish someone would release another game like this (apart from Mario Kart).

That's a tricky one for me as i have quite a few but if i could narrow it down to a couple of titles (All from the Xbox 360) it would be

GRID

The other notable game would be Need for Speed: Most Wanted (The original version)

I'd be happy with modern physics and graphics. They can still use the same cars as far as I'm concerned. I just want to rag the hell out of the Volvo 850!

Depends on the mood I'm in. For an easy-arcade-quick-drive I'd choose Drive Club.
When I'm into collecting 25 Nissan GTR's (not counting the different Colors) it's GT5 / 6 ;-)
As it comes to the simulation aspect and that you actually have to work on your driving skills, Project Cars.

Disclaimer: This are all games I know since I started late so my experience to choose from is not that big.

This is blindingly obvious to me..it has to be Project CARS. I race on 2 wheels mainly but I have most of the 4 wheels titles also. Project CARS rewrote the rule-book imo on the console format. Nothing else compares in truth.

pretty sure l had that on pc win98 girlracer tracey, did it have the open wheel fords, ford fiesta and the touring cars honda accord amongst others, cant recall a tank? I remember it being a seroius racer with no gimmicks, was it a series of races and could you tune the tank? May a bit of rake lol. I thought toca 2 on xbox wasnt bad lots of hours spent online with stock tune races. Global lights, hotrods and formula 1000 good times.

I have much love for the original Colin McRae Rally game. I don't think it could be classed as Sim but it took itself quite seriously. Likewise 'World Rally Championship' - I think it had an orange theme with a Seat Cupra on the front. Both were pretty special for their day.

A lot of the modern off road games are a bit too 'dude, awesome, rad, look at me' for my liking. (See Dirt series)

Rally Championship? Was that the one that was based on the British Rally Championship of the late 90s? I loved that. I remember massively long, realistic stages in Kielder Forest, Scotland, Isle of Man.....even longer on the PC, think some of the stages were about 20 mins long? It looked beautiful for the time, too. Handled like a pig though.

Xbox- GRID Race Driver
Playstation- Driveclub

Overall, Driveclub, I thought GRID would not be beaten but Driveclub is simply a superb racer in my eyes, still loving it! Notable mentions for the early Colin McCrae games, TOCA, Wipeout 2097, Mario Kart on the SNES, the 1st Destruction Derby and Super Monaco GP on the Megadrive.

I like online racing only, & for me I had the most fun by a long run in Gran Turismo 5. Shuffle Racing was a stroke of genius imo, & the plethora of clean stock/spec lobbies was never ending. The sheer amount of adrenaline filled duels between gentleman drivers I had was astounding. Nothing past or present has ever come close to that multiplayer bliss. That said, the game did have it's flaws, but for me the online racing was sublime.

OMG i forgot about that one, another classic that i spent so much time on after coming home from school and going on that. I always used to drive around in reverse to start with to save my engine and front wheels (When in the bowls) what a game. I feel again this is another game that would be perfect for a remake. DiRT Showdown was good but it wasn't a true smash um and crash um kinda game.

It was pretty awful on the PlayStation from what I remember but much better on PC. Consoles just weren't remotely able to match PCs in those days, but points to the PSX version for at least trying. The PC game had tracks based on real ordinance survey maps I think, it was up there with TOCA - but the handling on both versions I remember being pretty awful.

It gets lot of bad mouthing, perhaps quite rightly, after it's poor launch but for many months it has grown, been tweaked and fast becomes a highly enjoyable arcade racer- very pick up and play, gorgeous to look at (I love the impression of speed the Hyper cars offer) with plenty of snorting cars. Sure it ain't PCar levels of realism but who wants 2 games that are the same? :)

Gran Turismo 3 for me. After the initial awe of experiencing the first one back in 1998, 3 was the most polished of the whole series.

Split screen multiplayer on Lotus Esprit was insanely good fun (oh, those pit stops for fuel still haunt me).

On console I opt for Blur and Flatout Ultimate Carnage (although the original Flatout on PC was way better) purely on the grounds that the online multiplayer was flawless.
..And Blur is probably one of the most underrated games ever made.

Bizarre Creations Formula One from 96. it was such a huge step forward. Before this time you must have a pc when you want to drive racing game beside arcaderacer. the game suffers on some bugs but it doesn't matter at this time. That game was really a revolution on console. Before whe must live with one (ridge racer) or four (sega rally, daytona) track racing games. It was the first racing game that I can't wait for the release. But it's impossible to say which one are the definitely greatest. Because all have great moments. It must count minimum 10 to 15 games that deserve to be named.

I bought my first ever playstation, a PS2, solely to play the new GT that was coming out ~10 years ago (GT4?) because it was supposed to have multiplayer included (but scrapped at the last moment).

I did buy Enthusia, but I didn't get into it in a big way (just like GTR; GTR2; GTL on the pc), because back then I was still used to NFS and TRD titles and their insane grip/cornering levels... I had a passenger experience around Castle Coombe and you could basically change Codemasters cornering speeds from their mph to real life kph in a Suburu Impreza!

The PS2 did not last long, it barely got any use once I got sick of the AI and no multiplayer of GT, so sadly I never got chance to try Enthusia again after seeing the sim light (because I've read since that it was apparently ahead of its time, especially for a console sim).

Gran turismo 5, it was awesome to trade cars and have a used car dealer. Nothing cooler then having other people race your Bob and wake up to more credits

PGR2 without a doubt, my introduction to both online racing and the Nordschleife :)

PGR 2, NFS: Carbon, NFS: Underground, and NFS: Underground 2 were my introductions to the racing genre. Race Driver Grid was what brang me to the authentic racing experience, or atleast close to it.

No love for Enthusia for PS2 in this thread? I can't force myself to play anything else than pCARS now (when it comes to racing on console or computer) .... but loved Enthusia very much in the past (along with GT4 - best GT ever)

Enthusia was probably my favorite racing game alongside GT3, GT4, and The Burnout series:cool:

Enthusia never got on my radar at the time, which is a surprise because in those days I was up for any racing sim. I dunno how I missed it, but I had to google it as it literally didn't register. Shame, looks quite good, but I struggle going back to PS2 racers nowadays because I'm used to the HD generation and they look rough as hell these days. I tried TOCA2 on the PlayStation the other day and it almost made me cry. What the hell is that? We're spoiled today. Leave it to the memories!!

Use emulators, upscale resolution and all is good .... but when it comes to racing games, it is not all about graphics only.

I have zero idea how to do that, I can just about handle doing emails.

I used to adore TOCA2, still probably my favourite racer of all time, but it did shock me how shit it looked in 2015.

Did anyone else here enjoyed the Kaido Battle / Kaido Racer racing series on PS2 ?

The series was developed by Genki, and was only focusing on Touge (japanese mountains pass) battles on existing road IRL.
It had a strong "Initial D" spirit (the japanese anime about touge battle) and was quite challenging.

It was called Kaido Battle in japan, Kaido Racer in Europe, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: DRIFT in NA, with Kaido Racer = Kaido Battle 2, and so on.

The setting was that you would try to impress sponsors during the day with time-trial, then go compete against other road racers during the night.
The game featured several (static) weather, from dry to storm.

I have so much good memories of it. The first time I succeeded in taking a whole hairpin while drifting was such a bliss, because contrary to what it looks like watching the videos, it was not that easy to make a good drift.

No mention of Advan Racing on PSX, that was the best racing games for me. No game, even to this day has fully licensed tire brand ( different model, rim, tread, compound, and can set a stagger setup-non fixed tire size on cars ) Each tire model has different stats, with cars from JTCC, road cars, tire wear, clutch + manual on PSX and freaking cockpit view, even GT on PSX, PS2, and PS3 didn't have these or even Pcars :) I do hope Pcars 2 will have fully licensed tires with several model line up, and can custom fit tires ( different size, tread, compound on each axle )

#1: Formula 1 Championship Edition for PSX. Also known as Formula 1 '97 in Europe. Fantastic racing; lapped cars moved out of the way, and engine failures made me cry.

#2: F1 World Grand Prix for N64. Greatest circuit introductions I've seen to this date. (https://youtu.be/dQuVSNvANv0?t=1m32s)

PGR4......nothing has come close to the addictiveness of that game. Sun, rain, sleet, snow, ice, cars Vs bikes, team racing. Level playing field. Those were the days.

Need for Speed for the 3DO and Gran Turismo for the PS1, console wise those two are the culprits for me even though Enduro for the Atari 2600 had is part in that as well.

Auto Modellista

I liked that for the style. NFS underground 2 was a great game but the Gran Turismo series is the best especially GT 2 and 4. GT5 was great online must of put 2000+ hours in it.

Thinking of loads now. Test drive, toca 1 & 2, Carmegedden, Shift, wipeout and demolition derby. Loads of memories but still GT series, hopefully project cars can match them.
