I know this might be a fairly short thread with the event ending tomorrow evening, but I've not been doing too badly in it for once! :D

Currently 2nd fastest PS4 gamepad (15th overall) on a clean 1:31.7. Potential for a mid 1:30 with room for improvement in setup. Haven't looked at the ghosts yet to see if anyone is track extending at Copse.

I'll try to upload a video later, but there is a better one on youtube already from Joni doing a clean 1:28. Top time on PS4 is a 1:27.7 from yinato. Top gampad time is a 1:31.4.

I used a setup from Jack van Hees as a basis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w1dHOaVXP8) - then tweaked the sways and softened the rear springs a couple of clicks to reduce oversteer. Also radiator is closed off.

Also using TC on 1% and ABS, but no SC.

Currently shedding some rear downforce (front 7, rear at 6) and extending 7th gear slightly in response which is definitely helping.

Let me know if you're trying this one. :D

I don't see much enthousiasm for this event. However many have moaned to have cleans events and we have one here. I hope we'll see what they can do.

We can go outside at Copse but you'll lose time contrast to the SLS.

Yes, I noticed that. It's probably why I'm further up the board compared to normal! :P

There are also some big gaps in the times within the top 10, and several names missing.

I agree, I don't think there is as much time going wide at Copse compared to the Merc SLS. And no laps using the pitlane shortcut yet. So it's a good time to give it a go!

I wish I had a bit more time to spend on it, but I feel as though I'm improving slowly! :D

Running copse wide definately dont make you loose time, just silly to try make it sound like its completely ok to do so. It just enables the fact that you can run lower df which is faster for overall laptime, when dont have any intention to stay inside the lines. I know because when tried lower df setup, went wide and all happened was that gained time, not only at copse but also the whole run towards maggots. So if you do it on purpose you will only gain more.

So ye have fun doing that. I hope the strict 2 wheel limits dev:s were talking earlier in week will arrive soon, then we can have prober competition.

I pass Copse thoroughly ( without breaking or releasing ) at 296km/h so my car didn't have to go out and it's faster...Depens on your setup but yes if you can't go faster than 280km/h it's faster to go outside but not with mine.

In the end you will probably see one of the SDL guys on top the one right behind me inching closer has now decided that driving 4 wheels off track last turn until the finish is ok. 2 wheels on the green ok but all 4 off past the line and way to the left nahh stupid track boundries

Is the LB consolidating all platforms, I mean, PC, XB1 and PS4? No way I can do Copse at full gas, 297 km/h, even with MAX df...I am just curious...if the LBs are unified, we probably have differences in the platforms "codes behaviors" and then this competition thing is not fair at all. Judging by your replay, you are not in a PC because it is fairly different compared to my settings, not to mention the RB or LB button I saw in your screen shot!!!

You did a great and clean lap, but it seems line an "arcade" version...we could even compare to the F1 race we had this morning and you do not take the 1st corner and Copse, for example, flat out...strange really!

No there not combined as far as I know, there all seperate but they look at all 3 and see whos quickest from what I understand, and PC should be faster yet.

As far as lap times, and this corner or that flat out not sure anyone can program an exact sim of the real world

Thank you and please do not take me wrong, you were great in that lap but I am starting to believe they consolidate what we see, at least from the PC side, and those are lap times we can not match. I have a very good setup I believe and I am something like 5 seconds slower than you...and I can not do those corners at full speed without losing or spining the car. I also have a bump in the middle of the first corner I did not see in your lap. I am going to open a post to collect other opinions. Thank you and congrats!

Happy to have managed a 1:31.3 which is currently the best pad time on PS4 and onto the very bottom of the first page, yay! :D

I'm losing seconds through Copse and Abbey vs Atho and Yinato but can "keep up" through the slower bits. I'm currently not able to take Copse or Abbey flat with df at 7,6. But I'm going to try df at 7,5 and see if that helps improve the turning arc. It does make the back more nervous though, and if you're thumbstick movements are back and forth it can create a small pendulum effect.

Better I have found to increase the speed sensitivity setting (mine is 65) and let that mechanism maintain one steering angle through the corner by jamming the thumbstick to the edge. Smoothness is key to avoiding a spin, which allows a looser (but stable) rear, key to turning well in the fast corners - and maybe even Copse flat!

Guys like Atho and Pilot make it look easy though!

Yeah it's not easy lot of trial and error still not sure about getting more straightline speed even reducing wings doesnt seem to match some ghost ive followed and makes me wonder is there a magical setting.

Ive always been pretty quick on bikes and cars in real life just never had the funds to get track time, and race cars. Done a bunch of lapping in formula fords, and Raced only 2 races way back managed 6th the first day started 12th and 3rd the second day started 8th both days 12 cars on the grid, never had very good times in traffic for quali so that pretty much makes it a chore in those cars to move up.

Thanks for the kind words there

It's your setup this track uses a littl bit diffrent than the normal setup it has less grip it seems, so its a combo of mechanical and aero ballance to get it there. I probably have done 4 days of just trying diffrent setups doing at least 50 laps in each setup just trying to understand what is going on at this track to get grip all around.

Joni Varis
06-07-2015, 11:00
I must miss some essenitial thing at setup with this combo, no matter what i try just cant get thru copse anywhere even close to those speeds, my entry speed is like 20km/h slower. I actually have to quickly drop to 6th not to go wide there. I could probably get like 28.4 with current setup, but no way to get into 27:s.

Gearing is one thing i noticed immideatly im using very different, im at 2-3gear on slower corners and dont use 1 gear at all. But then again if i would downshift like that would spin at every braking. But ye thats the name of the game, should of put more effort to it trying find those "exploits" so no one else to blaim than myself.

That is an awesome setup, I wonder if it works on PC. Was going to give this another go to try and close up to Joni but haven't got time to figure out setup and I'm a bit clueless when it comes to it. With that kind of setup though with speed you can carry, it seems it will be effortless to do a low 1:28 time or a time in 1:27's. Understand though if you don't want to share as it might affect your ranking. Are you running higher downforce levels? My lap and setup I used uploaded a few days ago below:

That vid looks more like my driving atm. Poor traction out of slow corners but at same time understeer at high speeds :) Using same wings as you aswell, so i dont really get how to make the car more pointy at this stage. There is no way to take any more rearwing off or it becomes almost undriveable. Also tried to fiddle with suspension, ride height etc but all changes seemed to only make it worse. Example softer front springs at front & stiffer at rear just created massive understeer at t1 & copse which doesnt really make much sense.

It has horrible traction out of Luffield, I think one area a lot of lap time can be found if it doesn't want to spin out coming out of there. Even though setup is not great, it seems a lot faster than default. I'm glad though I only spent a little time driving with this setup now as the setups people on the consoles have made seem incredible. My best sector times probably be just be able to get a tenth or so ahead of your current fastest time but that will require an awesome lap to pull off for me. I'm using your setup tips so probably why it is similar but amazed how much understeer there is given low rear downforce and high front downforce. With the setup others are using, all the corners will be easier to take, feels like if we had only a few laps with them we could be like a second up without needing to push as hard.

Great lap saidur.

Mate I'm still having to take Abbey at 170 with a lift and you're at 180 flat. It's all relative!

One thing is true, it's hard to know how much of a level playing field there is in this game. But this is true for racing in real life as well I guess.

I'm not flat through there, small lift. I thought it was quite good setup until I came on here seeing the speed others can carry through some corners and lap times. Only part of lap I liked really is the complex of Maggots, Becketts and Chapel. Lost too much time in the first sector compared to my best and didn't really do enough laps to figure out last sector and KERS usage.

Yup, as i said could get to like 28.4 if would get "perfect" lap, but with this setup can only dream of 27:s so dont think ill do any more running with it. Thing i noticed from the vid last page is that actually have higher topspeed than factorypilot, so he must be using more rearwing. If i add any more wing it only creates bucketloads of understeer at high speeds, but doesnt really make it any better at slow corners = only makes me slower.

Silverstone is bit strange on this game somehow. It seems to have much less grip than Catalunya or Spa as didnt have any problems with traction out of slow corners on those.

Seems to have some bumps that affect the car massively, compared to Catalunya which had much better grip in similar kind of corners. Probably a big difference in mechanical setup as that can make car more on the nose I imagine. Low and high speed balance he has achieved seems incredible as it seems glued to the track while turning into the corners better. Even with our understeery setup, the car is really loose on power. Think we will lose out heavily to console gamers especially as quite a number of them work in teams and I imagine our "perfect" lap with current setup will easily be beaten with such a good setup as the gain in middle sector is so big and so much easier to pull off. I wonder though on previous Formula A events, sector difference didn't seem so big so I wonder if it is like a eureka moment for them or just this track where a bad setup gets found out more easily.

Just makes me wonder what setting actually could make such dramatic difference, comparing our laps to factorypilot:s there is like night & day difference on cars handling. Also its really strange that some settings on setup, example springs seems almost work as reversed. Softening front and making rear more stiff really shouldnt result massive understeer. When i made the front softer and rear stiffer, it got so understeery that couldnt even make the t1 flatout anymore, just went completely straight when turned in LOL.

Will be awesome if you did share your setup, see if console is quicker than PC or just setup difference. Will be interesting to see if you find my gearing quicker as with your gearing, you seemed to have great traction and stability even with low gears. Going to second gear I struggled with car spinning out.

The Wisconsin Retrospective TT with the Bentley. PS4 and x1 CANT drive that times on PC. Now the PC cant drive the Times on consoles.
But at RA both of them tells us we console drivers were bad ,have no idea about setup etc etc etc.

look in the thread, really they thought theyre the fastest guys on earth...... LOOOOOOL

sry but now i hope we come together with the fact that the game have some major problems with idk what. its the 2nd event we have such a difference and i think joni will rectify himself with his comments at RA.
Can you believe us now ,that was something wrong at RA ?

I wouldnt say that yet. I put a lot more effort to RA event, for this one i only did handfull of laps today. So might just as well be some setup thing havent found, or not. Example at RA event first day i was knocking my head to wall when tried to use low df setup which thought would be good for track has such long straights, but when switched to use high aero setup gained a lot of time by it immideatly.

its not a excuse for anything. its really a fact that the platforms have another tyre model, grip lvl or something else. it must be a issue, im telling this since the last TT .

Then proove it yourself and look for the "magic setting". For sure youll find another excuse after the TT . I think its better we check this issue out and give the devs feedback as we argue each other.....

I did my usual basic changes on that event and was really slow in cornering speed compared to you. Just tested out first corner mainly. Then tried a setup from here and was much closer. Incredible the difference a setup can have so hopefully it is just finding the magic setup and not platform differences.

wisconsin retrospective with the bentley at road america.

the PC was at 46.9
the consoles was at 48.1 or 3

i telled them that we cant techniquly drive that times. it was impossible even with the same setups of the guys on PC. we was every lap more than a second slower and our tyrewear was nearly twice as much.

try it to yourself factory, use the setup of semperger from road america for the bentley and your a second slower as him.

Seriously man stop it allready. Your point is taken, no need to repeat it every second. If you are so sure there is something like that send PM/emal with "proofs" to the devs. Moaning here doesnt get you anywhere.

Tyre temps are fine in this event, mine are all green even if i do 5 laps in a row, so that doesnt explain anything. I dont have time to do more laps anymore today. But probably will give it a another try someday later this week to see if there is something i missed on setup. I guess only way to get certain proof would be to have some fast guy with both PC & Console version, then using same setup and comparing times beetween platforms. I dont have PS4 or XO versions of the game so cant compare it = wont make any claims like that.

And there is allready 1.27.9 done on PC aswell, with assists on tho.

I think the F1 is just a little more complex than most cars for setups, and understanding of how everything is affected by the entire setup. Pretty sure ive changed everything on mine from the base setup.

Joni Varis
06-07-2015, 17:20
Well its not like im complete noob with this car, but on this track i just cant get it to handle well (anywhere as good than on your vid). Its either too understeery or too unstable at fast corners & like on ice at slow corners no matter what i do. Havent had any of these issues on other tracks ive tried it, which is only thing that makes this bit strange. Your lap looks more like laps i did with formula B yesterday with smooth cornering. Much more stable, predictable and has very pointy front.

Oh well after event ends maybe some who got to 27:s post the setup and will see where got it all so wrong LOL.

FACT0RY PIL0T
06-07-2015, 17:34
Yeah johny it was ice for me at first but after countless hours of trial and error I got it to almost perfect, but if even a slight change here and there it's easly 1-1.5 seconds a lap slower and more a handfull to drive.

But I will say this there are no magic setups that will make you number 1, ive even in the past handed out one of my top time tunes on a forum and only 2 guys were able to match my time, and beat it. Everyone has a driving style some better here or there, and a setup can help in the weak areas and accel in the strong areas of a driver.

Joni Varis
06-07-2015, 17:39
Yes i know there is no magic setup that makes you suddenly fast, but at this particular combo i really do feel that there would be lots of time to be found if just would get the stability issues sorted. Now with poor balance i have to be so carefull that its more about surviving lap without big mistake rather than pushing for the fast lap :)

These guys and the guys on xbox have a little battle going on for braging rights, between themselves. I will say this the ones ive chased on xbox there cars are 1-2 car lengths ahead of me at the end of the straights, and they obviously have figured out something to make them way faster on acceleration as even with wing adjustments I cant match there straightline but my corners seem far better, and there wheel drivers but all over the place.

Ah, ran out of time!

Ended with a 1:30.9. I did a lap where I monstered Becketts/Chapel and had 6 tenths in hand, but span at the last corner! Would have only gained one place with it though, so I'm not too gutted. Would have got me on the front page but hey-ho. :D

I was improving the setup all the time. I tried saidur's setup and suffice to say it didn't suit me - spinning at every corner, hehe. So I ended with df at 8,5.

I'll stick it on time trial and see if I can get a video, even if it's not as fast as you guys. Just for comparison.

Good to hear setup is easy to spin car as I always wondering if it is my driving causing it or setup and seems the room for setup improvement is huge.

Will be good to see Yinato's lap and see how much better car setup can be in cornering speeds as well as traction out of low speed corners. Seems all platforms are the same in speed, just need to make an amazing setup. I wish SMS did a stock TT if possible, will be interesting to see where I would rank.

Edit: He has already uploaded it. Wow incredible setup to have that much cornering speed as well as straightline and acceleration speed. Seems beatable.

PS4.

Looks increadybly stable and effortless. Simply turns in and car just responds and doesnt even use whole track at all parts. Im having similar topspeed, but cornering speeds are like 20km/h slower and traction is so poor that i get atleast some wheelspin out of every slow speed corner no matter how gently i try to go on gas. So ye must have some seriously good setup to get it that stable.

But then again im not sure that lap was done without aids, looks/sounds to me like there was atleast tc & abs enabled. But that doesnt explain the insane cornering speeds LOL.

He only said he used ABS. Pure grip advantage, when you have that much of it, must make it really easy to do fast times.

For me it sounds that it has the "crunching" sound out of slow corners that you get with tc enabled. But if not makes it even more strange, he simply has no wheelspin at all. I hope some of the no tc drivers who go into 27:s will reveal what made the trick for them.

I did some ride height changes later yesterday (more rake) and managed to improve to 28.1 & best combined sector would of gaved like 27.9, but still loosing almost second at s2, looking the vid basicly most of it at copse, maggots, becketts.

Hopefully someone reveals it. Looks similar aero to what we were running though going by top speed. They must have somehow managed to engineer out the understeer. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Longitudinal Weight Bias and Sway Bars as they make a big difference IIRC.

I actually fiddled with weight bias yesterday, but for me moving it backwards only made it more unstable so reverted back to 53.0, also sway bars tried all sorf of combinations without any luck. Lastly tried radical diff changes without any noticeable improvement. At that point gaved up :)

I usually i know how to setup car atleast decently to fit my driving style, but with this honestly was quite lost. Simply couldnt get it anywhere near to feel comfortable to push it.

I remember it making an incredible difference for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 at Silverstone, made it go from undrivable to on rails. Probably something in there with a lot of balancing can make the difference.

I usually see you are on the pace so having a setup that could keep up I thought I was on the right track. Glad though now I didn't spend time trying to nail a lap with setup as it seems like it would have been a waste of time given how much better setup a lot had. Out of interest what did you change the ride height to for more rake for future reference, seemed like a big improvement? Might mess around with car one day and see if I can get similar grip.

Just made the rear higher, i think 78mm was where i end up. It made the car even more tricky on slow corners, but better thru corner 1 & s2. Didnt need to change to 6th anymore at copse entry, only slight lift with 7th. Overall the changes didnt really make any massive step to better as it was just basicly tradeoff beetween fast & slow corners. Just got lap done where i didnt make any big mistakes which made the most difference.

Joni, why does it say auto clutch is off for your time on the leaderboard? Do you use manual clutch in a Formula A car?

Joni Varis
07-07-2015, 11:53
Formula A & B doesnt have autoclutch by default. It has autoblip on upshifts/downshift that is automaticly controlled by engine electronics, you dont need to use clutch on cars like this apart from start/pitstop. If you actually have autoclutch enabled it can be considered as driving aid as it actually smoothes out the downshifting.

07-07-2015, 12:04
That's cool! I wonder if there any wheels out there that have a double clutch on the back of the steering wheel like irl?

I remember in Forza now that I had clutch configured to one of the face buttons in between change up and change down, so I could use the clutch on the gamepad.

In the slower cars it was faster to change gear this way. Not sure if this applies to pCARS, and obviously doesn't apply to the FA. I'll give it a try later though.

Can you stall with a manual clutch? It wasn't possible to stall in Forza from what I recall.

Compared to laps posted here which looked so effortless, its night and day difference. Have to shortshift and still get wheelspin up to 3-4 gear.

Thing is i have no idea what to tweak anymore, played with dampers yesterday & didint really seem to make much difference to low speed behaviour. Only way for me to get stable rear is to use soft rear springs & arb, but then it gets horribly understeery at high speeds.
