Did they get the name right?

Since Forza 6 was released I've been thinking about this and a comment on a different thread leads me to believe they didn't.

PCar's and forza are being compared to each other all the time both with this forum and forza's main forum yet the game's are like apple's and pears, I really like Forza always have but I except it for what it is a car game now project "cars" on the other hand isn't really about the cars it's more about the sensation of grit racing.

The physics in PCar's are second to none on console but it's not just that, the sound's are raw and then you have all the points table's ect, yes it has cars of course it does it couldn't be a racing/motorsport game without them and that kinda my point.

To be honest I think the name project cars is better suited to forza and something along the lines of Project motorsport is better suited to PCar's.

No doubt project motorsport was probably a no no because of forza so maybe something like project racing?

I own both these games and enjoy them both but there can be no doubt that Pcars is the motorsport game and forza is more the car game, and imho playing the two off of each other is a pointless exercise, I wonder if SMS had named they game something else something more in tune to what the game actually portraits IE grit racing would there still be this comparison between the two?

I've had countless issues with Pcars but I'll stick by it because of what the game offers, Forza on the other hand yes it's fun and I enjoy it but I can take it or leave it because it's just a car game it isn't motorsport.

Forza = Cars
PCar's = Grit motorsport

The two games are not the same

So why the name?

C.A.R.S. was the name at first. It was for Community Assisted Racing Simulation. Since the name was too close to the movie Cars, they decided to add "Project" and remove the dots.

It's Project CARS, not Project Cars.

CARS = Community Assisted Racing Simulator

'CARS' in Project CARS has nothing to do with actual cars, it stands for: Community Assisted Racing Simulator.

So what's your point?

Whilst we all know what CARS stands for, nobody when looking at box art knows this. It's a good name for development, but it does not market well. So yes, the name is CARS, but it markets like Cars. That's just how it is.

Project Cars doesn't seem to be having a problem with marketing.

Ridge Racer Unbounded was another Bandai Namco published game, and it was named very poorly and didn't market well.

Edit: People are going to draw comparisons across racing games regardless of specific content. GRID Autosport was clearly named, and it was compared to other racing games as well.

Some people on this forum really can be an arse, on the box it says Cars to me and most of the buying public that means motor vehicles.

So what's my point wasn't really needed, you could like the others of just explained, but ah I get it you need to stand out.

Well, the game is about cars still :)

I remember we had a long thread about finding a name for the game, and it really wasn't easy finding something unique, covering the approach of the game and be catchy enough. "Project CARS" wasn't really supposed to be the final name IIRC, or maybe it was, but in the end it stayed as because of the unique community-funded and -co-developed nature of the game the name quickly got out during development and changing it again when it was becoming known as Project CARS was probably a bad idea.

Feel free to come up with an alternative name, though ;)

Good post until nicely ended with sarcasm like most of your replies.

Fine I got it wrong, I didn't know what CARS stood for, I certainly won't be inquisitive again.

My bad, I wanted to write "Feel free to come up with an alternative name, though", being a genuine remark to perhaps get some nice name finding going on in this thread (the original naming thread over at WMD had some good laughs back then :)). No sarcasm was intended at all.

I played Forza quite a lot back in the day, and here's the thing - Forza used to be all about racing. Believe it or not, the physics in that game, especially in 4, were pretty advanced and realistic, at least as far as you can take realism on an Xbox 360 hardware and using a regular non-wheel controller. Currently Forza Motorsport games (from 3 or maybe 5 onwards) became literally "Car Porn: The Game".

Basically how I'd put it:
Forza Motorsport is all about how cars and all those little details only enthusiasts care about look.
Project CARS is all about how cars and all those little details only enthusiasts care about work.
And then there's also Forza Horizon (which I think is Project Gotham Racing spiritual successor) which is a lot more about fun rather than realism but without letting all that realism go away. Kind of like NFS:Shift I think. I also noticed that some of that "feel good" mentality of this subseries has bled into the Motorsport series.

Then again, I wouldn't go as far to say Project CARS is all that realistic when it comes to how cars exactly work, but the physics seem pretty true to life so I'd say the cars react realistically as well as feel that way, in an immersive kinda way.

Funny was thinking this as well, mainly about Forza Motorsport as Turn 10 stuck with it but it really isn't about 'motorsport', Forza Petrolheads Playground is more like it..

Forza is like GT
Project Cars is like the TOCA / GRID franchise. (but next gen and MUCH MUCH better physics before I get lynched by the 'mob')

Shift 1 and Shift 2 tried to be all of them.

It could be called 'This Is Turd' for all I care - if it's enjoyable I'll still play it :).

Disregard my previous comment - I'm very glad it wasn't called SEX.

I've taken several days holiday from work in the past few months & answered "Oh I'll just be at home playing Project C.A.R.S." when asked what my plans were.

I imagine "I'll just be at home playing SEX" would've resulted in a much more uncomfortable situation.

Not as uncomfortable as the looks you'd get from the wife / girlfriend if she asked why you were in a bad mood and you told her "SEX isn't working right tonight".

I could see that being a relationship killer. :P:

@Remco: It wasn't supposed to be the name, but after development took longer than initially planned (when the game was still supposed to be a free to play PC only game) more and more news articles about it came out and the name just stuck. Towards the end everyone knew the game as Project CARS, so it would have been silly to try and change it. =)

You could always come up with silly backronym names for the game, like Project Really Authentic Circuit Experience. =)

I've been following PCars since early in its development so I knew what the game was about and what to expect from it, but for the average joe who didn't follow the game's development and doesn't know what CARS stands for the title can be misleading, they expect PCars to be a GT/FM clone with hundreds of cars. Imo something like "Project Motorsport" or "Project Race" would be a more appropriate title since the game focuses on realistic racing and not on collecting & customizing cars.

But point to point tracks tho, Jussi!Considering how much wider than real roads those are, the name doesn't apply to them that well, so I see no issue. =)

I don't really see the point of this thread. So CARS is an acronym that some people may not know the meaning behind. Should SMS recall all the retail copies so they can put a new name on it? Not like it can be changed so it's pretty pointless.

At this point it's just humorous musing really. Don't need to take every thread that seriously. =)

No, I see this thread simply as some name suggestions for the sequel, might be fun if a poll is included.
