Hello, everyone! I know that right now it is not possible to make metallic painting. My question is: why?

Is it too hard to accomplish or is it a secret?

I tried to do something that is getting close to metallic, but it doesn't do justice to the real effect, of corse. It is still a work in progress, I'll try to refine it, if I can't accomplish it I'll say that this is a new paint style then :D

Here are some screenshots, right below the screenshots, there is a demo video:

Metallic paint has its own shader and cant be triggered w/ the custom liveries. I wonder tho w/ every kind of mods flying around there, there should be a way to unlock it :black_eyed:

I think there is, with unpacked files that expose the cars .rcf will make metallic paint possible as it is required to be layered under the livery.

At least that is how I got it working for SHIFT 2 back then.

I tried to find the files that could do it, but they have names that you can't be associate with every car. That would be great, 'cause I'd really love to create some metallic paintings and liveries.

I remembered there was a thread like this and well yes, it is possible to create metallic paint and liveries. The game also has matte shader (looks much better than simply editing spec).
You need to replace paint material files in *.rcf files. However, yes as zuotoski mentioned each car has different default materials which need to be replaced. So you need to figure out car's default material names. Easiest way is to install livery with Custom Livery tool. This replaces all paint material files with generic materials and all you have to do is replace NEWMATERIAL with the one you want.

I copied my instructions for matte paint from RD but is same thing for metallic paint (except fresnel textures do work with metallic paint and material file name is different but I guess it's easy to figure that out)

1) Add alpha layer for you livery file. Paint places where you want matte effect black and nonmatte white. And save it as DXT5 interoplated alpha.
2) I suggest you make copy of my livery_merc_matte.mtx, rename it and then you can edit different values there for your liking, play around a little.
3) replace paint materials in *.rcf file. Easiest would be to install livery with Custom Livery tool and then just replace NEWMATERIAL="..." /> with the one you want NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_matte.mtx" />.

In case on Z4 - Custom Livery tool adds these lines
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_generic_effects.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_skin" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_generic_effects_autoskin.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_cpit"
NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_generic_effects_autocpit.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_cpit_skin" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_generic_effects_autoskin_autocpit.mtx" />

And you just replace NEWMATERIALS with your material file name in there. So it would look like this
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_matte.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_skin" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_matte.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_cpit" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_matte.mtx" />
<REPLACE MATERIAL="vehicles\bmw_z4_gt3\bmw_z4_gt12_paint_cpit_skin" NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_matte.mtx" />

I know that all those cpit and autoskin material files are different but I haven't got around recreating them for matte paint. Maybe will look into them more deep but meanwhile I haven't noticed anything wrong by replacing them with same material file.

Half the car is metallic and other isn't.

Haven't tried the metallic effect yet, but the matte effect is really awesome!

I've now added the effect to several of my liveries, but could it be that even though the altered NEWMATERIAL lines (... NEWMATERIAL="vehicles\_generic_materials\livery_generic_effects.mtx" />) are added only to the liveries that should have it, that ingame other liveries of the same car are affected as well?

It shouldn't be. You have seen something like that?

Hmm not sure, gotta check once more, I was just under the impression that when I changed the default paint of one single livery of the C7R to matte paint, all of a sudden all other C7R liveries appeared to be wearing the new matte coat too. Will do some more investigation and report back!

Hey Gethema. Just tried your AMG GT3 HTP pack. And I don't have this matte effect. Surely the custom livery tool is sorting the correct material in the .rcf file , isn't it ? So what can be the problem ? :(

Custom Livery tool doesn't replace materials. You have to edit .rcf files yourself. He has included detailed instructions in download (Readme) :)
