Bitdefender 2018 new feature - SafeFiles blocks the EXE from saving. Add exception and happy racing. Cheers all

Keep getting failed to save data so can't change any settings. Turned of UAC, antivirus etc... to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Kind Regards,
TGSAlex

has the game managed to create a folder "Project CARS 2" in your documents folder ?

TGSAlex
21-09-2017, 23:25
Yes it has, includes:
Records
savegame
ugc
workshop

Save game folder has subdirectory of
8 digits ->project cars 2 -> Empty

If there's nothing saved and you can get away with deleting your profile, go ahead and delete it to start again and give it a 2nd try

(the digits are your Steam ID)

well that's where it should be putting the default.sav, controller and local files.. so we just need to work out why the game refuses to write to that folder.. as it sounds like somehow the game is unable to access it

Sadly still getting the same issue after removing the folder :(

TGSAlex

Documents are stored on a different disk to the game, however this shouldn't be an issue as MySummerCar also is on the same disk as PC2 and has no issues

Aldo Zampatti

I wonder what is forbidding the game to save... to be on the safe side, I've formatted my gaming PC and started yesterday with plain Windows10, nvidia drivers, STEAM and everything works as expected.

Do you have Windows Defender AV? another one? if another one, can you turn off both?

Docs on C drive or moved elsewhere ?

I have two of my machines with Steam on different drives to the documents and have never had an issue (third one uses C for everything)

TGSAlex
21-09-2017, 23:46
Docs on C drive, games on E drive

TGSAlex

Moved game to the C: drive, still no success

Aldo Zampatti

Sorry, can't say what it could be. Somehow the game don't have the permission to write in your Documents folder thus can't save the data (it seems) but I find no setting here on my side that can cause that.

Mad Al
22-09-2017, 00:06
have you got any other steam games that save to the documents folder ?

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 00:08
Yes, BeamNg Drive - Besiege - Gang Beasts - Garry Mod - My Summer Car. All in the same location as PC2 and all save okay to the C: (documents) drive

This appears to be a project cars issues as just tried PC1 and I get the same issue.

Maybe also try Running Steam as Administrator and also setting the Project CARS 2 exe files to "Run as Administrator" in the File Properties in Windows.

TGSAlex

Just tried this, same issue. Look like it's not going to play ball

Morgan Henstridge
22-09-2017, 00:15
Also possibly try running a Chkdsk on the C: just to be sure there are no underlying issues.

May also be worth Verifying the game files in Steam to make sure there is no corruption on that side too.

Hi, I'm having the exact same issue. When I installed the game, documents were on C, game was on X. Now both are on C drive. Same issue.
Have run the game as administrator. No luck. Disabled file/folder sharing as someone suggested this. No luck
Only ever had this issue with this game. Never with any other games or even Project Cars 1

EDIT: Have tried verifiying game files and running a chkdsk

Thank god it's not just me! Just ran a check disk with no success :(

Just out of curiosity, what OS are you guys running, and what File System is on the C: ??

TGSAlex

Windows 10 Creators Update, NTFS

Are you running the preview program? That caused issues in the past. Go to Start and run "winver".
for reference, mine is :

Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.608).

Yep the same not a preview, latest stable build

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 00:30
Crap. It's funny since in the 3 systems I run the game from, I have two drives in all of them. Game on D Drive, documents on C drive and works flawlessly.
Has to be something else that I'm not aware of.... I'm thinking and trying ..

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 00:30
By the way, do you guys see this folder created?

Documents\Project CARS 2\dbgSession

If so, does it contains folders with timestamps?

KubikOssi
22-09-2017, 00:31
Windows 10, latest build, NTSF

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 00:31
Annoying, moved the game to C drive to test and then moved back to E and now steam no longer says it's installed. Just redownloading game so can't test any further suggestions for the next few hours

Are these NVME drives or normal SATA drives you guys with the issue have??

Not sure what the cause could be, but it will be something weird that these particular systems have in common.

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 00:37
Normal Sata drives in mine

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 00:38
Seems to be software side as it happens to me on both project cars & project cars 2

KubikOssi

normal SATA SSD Drive

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 00:39
I'm inclined towards software issue. Permissions/AV/Malware detector or something like that, but Alex stated he removed all that.

can you try closing EVERYTHING you see from your task manager and system tray and then running the game?

Morgan Henstridge
22-09-2017, 00:39
If you dont have the "dbgsession" folder, is there anything logged in the Windows Event Viewer at the time it fails to write the save data??

specifically the Application and System logs.

KubikOssi

i have project cars 1 and 25 other games installed on this drive, all runs perfect. only project cars 2 make problems

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 00:47
I understand. We're trying to think outside the box here to determine what's causing this issue. Is hard to tell without looking a screen or error logs.

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 00:48
As mentioned unfortunately I have to reinstall the entire game to get it back into steam so can't test further until tomorrow. Thanks for you help this evening and if I find anything tomorrow I'll be sure to post it.

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 00:49
Let us know. I'm eager to do it step by step scientifically so we can get to the bottom of it. And if we find a way to detect it, I can post it to the developers attention directly

Try this: (from a fellow WMD2 member)

Create a shortcut to the PCARS2 executable (normally pcars2avx.exe or pcars2.exe if you run an older CPU -old old).
In the pCars 2 shortcut I check the option to run the program as Admin

Launch the game from that shortcut. This was present for just 2 users on a very very very early build. It might help though

So step by step:

1- Go to your PCARS2 installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Project CARS 2 in my case)
2- Right click on pcars2avx.exe - Click COPY
3- Go to your desktop and right click on an empty space, click PASTE SHORTCUT
4- Right click on the shortcut you've just created, and click Properties
5- On the compatibility tab, at the bottom, click Run this program as an administrator
6- Click ok to close.

Run the program

KubikOssi

so, i see now, that Bitdefender 2018 blocked pcars2avx.exe to write in the documents folder

After disabling, did it worked correctly?

Mad Al

Oh here we go again, bitdefender being a pain in the ..... :(

add a folder exception for the PC2 install folder and save some pain later

Aldo Zampatti
22-09-2017, 01:05
Funny enough, my bitdefender (on just my son's laptop) and is not being a PITA, it just work. Weird.

Morgan Henstridge

Good to hear, Go run some laps and enjoy the game :)

@TGSAlex, do you also run BitDefender??

TGSAlex
22-09-2017, 01:09
Ah ha sounds like we're getting somewhere, yes I do indeed run BD2018 however I disabled it. Perhaps that wasn't enough so I will add an exception once reinstalled. Thanks again for your patience and assistance and I will report back once tested.

Morgan Henstridge
22-09-2017, 01:11
Some of those Antivirus things don't fully disable when you disable them. But adding the PCARS2 game directory and the My Docs\PCARS 2 folders to the exception list should stop it interfering if it is behaving itself :)

### SOLUTION ###
#############

Yep can't test but 100% the issue, can see in the logs.

It's due to BitDefender2018 new feature called "SafeFiles"

Separately disabled to the standard AV.

Apologies for wasting your time on this and thanks for your patience again. Really looking forward to playing now!

PS can you tell the devs to add the Focus RS 2016 ;)

Cheers,
Alex

TGSAlex

Oh is there a way to mark as solved

KubikOssi
22-09-2017, 01:17
you must only undo the exe-blocking, that's it

Morgan Henstridge
22-09-2017, 01:18
I think you can edit the original post and set the Title to start with [Resolved], or one of the Mods may be able to do it.

Sucks you have to wait for the download again now, but enjoy the game :)

That's awesome, so do I hence requesting. Had it since April, such a good car! Still amazes me to this day in the rain.(and in the dry)

Just to confirm to those having issues I've tested this morning and all is working well. Cracking game by the way, sounds are epic and it runs soo much better than the original over my three screen. Great job!

Any antivirus / internet security software may be doing the same thing.

In Windows 10 Fall Creators Update you must add exclusion for pCARS2AVX.exe in "Controlled folder access settings". "Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender Security Center -> Virus & threat protection -> Virus & threat protection settings -> Controlled folder access -> Allow an app through Controlled folder access". And developer should ask devs of antiviruses about right detection of their executable files to prevent these access troubles. If you use any other AV, look for similar settings. Cheers everyone!
