Straight out the pits in my formula rookie, I see which setup is loaded easily and intuitively, nice satisfying gear engagement and out I go. Wheels now have a really nice rotation graphic to them and so far this looks very nice indeed. Tyre test follows. :)
End of lap one and I've had a trouser accident. The sound on downshift was to blame.. back in I suspect several hours. Thanks guys and girls. :)

The game executable isn't that larger. Data for tracks, cars and sounds take up all the space. All it means is there isn't any a whole load of new DLC 'hidden' in the patch to be activated later. Though 2.7Gb is still a reasonable size so the 'Fun Pack' might be in there too.

Why is the download size so small? I thought it was their biggest patch to date?

The game code that runs the sim is likely a very very small part of the data, most of the game data is assets for sound and video and those will be largely unchanged.

Actually, patch has form of differentials between chunks of current and new version. Downloadable size of Patch 2 was 3.5GB, but it was updating more than 20GB (I remember 45GB of free space on disk was needed)

First impressions:
- handling feels much improved - tried 650S and F50 at Nordschleife & GP combined
- graphical performance in oculus cv1 with gtx1080ti has taken a severe nose-dive; stuttering and low framerates become very noticeable but only after a few minutes of play (fine at first, but even returning to main menu the issue still persists).

I'm outraged that the PS4 patch isn't released yet. ( just mostly kidding )...

Meanwhile... you PC guys... Patches I'm depending on you son, to pull this lowly console guy through, explaining in great detail as much as you can about every single improvement you can detect...

Zeem
28-11-2017, 13:04
I asked a simple question for a simple response.

Simplest answer? It's bug fixes for the most part. Changes in code. Lines of text. In theory the patch size should be even smaller than this, but it largely depends on how many fixed assets need to be downloaded, among other things outside our knowledge.

The amount of fixes isn't proportional to the size of the update. The size of the update is arbitrary depending on the file size of the assets that are being fixed.

Sounds seem to be HUGELY improved.
Graphics seem to be better (AA improved? Lighting improved?)
Handling seems to be better.
AI is better -but still lots of bumping at the start -maybe I need to lower the aggression (currently 40).

I loved the game before, but (as someone said before) it seems better in lots of ways.

sounds great. AA improvement would certainly be nice. i think the aliasing so far is worse then in iracing and ac especially in vr, but that could also be down to the more detailed graphics, when there are more details there is also more stuff to be aliased. now i am even more pumped to get home.

40 aggression seems plenty low to me to be honest. most simracers with ai have the same problem that there are pileups and bumping at a start of a race. i learned to live with it and not to be to aggressive myself and rather "start" my race after 2 or 3 corners. especially when there is a big field.

I felt the opponent cars sounded more 'beefy' and my car sound didn't dominate so much -as if the mix has somehow become more balanced? This was racing RDA, where I'm in the Radical and the AI is SAME CLASS.

I use headphones (Superlux HD 350) and Razer Synapse / Surround. I don't consider myself to be an audio aficionado but I thought it was pretty noticeable!

Reset your graphics settings and/or remove your graphicsconfig files in your documents folder.

Thanks Bealdor - I removed my graphicsconfig files; it seemed to help a little - the stuttering & framerate drop on Nordschleife was less severe but that may be due to the default details being reset to low. On further play it seems to be an issue affecting the larger circuits or Nordschleife specifically - runs perfectly fine with medium details on Bathurst & Spa. Also one thing I noticed is when I get stuttering in game, quit to the main menu and stuttering continues there - when I took my headset off and put it on again the problem went away. It's very odd and difficult to pin-down - I can probably find ways to work around the issue, but it's probably an area the QA team should take a look at.

Not sure I see anything related to the AI being insanely easy in career mode rallycross. Would definitely like confirmation that the AI in career rallycross has been made more exciting before I lock myself into another rallycross championship of the potential boredom. Refuse to do rallycross until it's actually challenging as it can be doing custom races.

That seems to be my only concern at this time, but otherwise greatly appreciate the proper patch notes, that's definitely how to make people happier :)

Now please please please, make an offline custom championship mode, that's the mode that'd be required to keep my attention for years to come.

Anyway, good job on the patch. Long time in the making. Polish this game up :)

Looks good, AI don't seem to Ram me up the jacsy anymore but that needs more testing.

The one thing, the one and only problem that I'd hoped and prayed would have been fixed hasn't.

It's so bad, there is now a name for it in the Oxford English Dictionary!

It's called Thomas The Tank Engine AI. CHoo-Choo. I just wanted a simple race where the AI would go at it. First corner, settle down....no overtaking at all.

So disappointing.

I felt the opponent cars sounded more 'beefy' and my car sound didn't dominate so much -as if the mix has somehow become more balanced? This was racing RDA, where I'm in the Radical and the AI is SAME CLASS.

Yeah seems like that and the replay sounds have improved, true. I still don't get that wow factor everyone is talking about, must be doing something wrong... Some nice fixes here and there but mostly stuff that should've been like that in the first place?! Can't see any changes to graphics either... But well, let's not judge after the first hour of testing! :)

My idea, and only My idea, not SMS idea, was to have a public championship based on license, like same champ for us, f, e, d, and so on, so same level pilot races with same level pilots, and not like now, where license rating is not used almost at all in online.

I just did a quick test on the AI first corner bunching issue and sadly it seems not much has changed at least on Nurburgring GP with a full field of 30 cars. Keeping this in perspective after the first corner the AI race really well so it's just a case of avoiding them at that first turn as it was in V1.13. Just a short clip, I'll try this again in VR when I've got more time.

Yes, I can confirm that. Also with i5 and GTX970, v-sync disabled, high settings.

By the way, with the latest GTX970 driver, does your game also starts to flash green when you start it? Have to tab out and go back to game to get rid of this. However was like this already before the patch.

Like what?

One example is the weather bug. The host receives the weather that was selected but the other online joiners are getting weather that is different.

I believe this to be a bug more about selecting a date for the race and the other online people getting real weather or something to that effect. What we normally have seen is that this only occurs when using the dedicated server. The server would be set to a specific weather "Clear" and a specific date but when the other members joined they would get different weather like rain or fog. When I looked up the real weather for that track rain was 40%.

Also not mentioned in the patch release were any fixes to dedicated server. I would hope SMS stays on top of the DS environment.

There has clearly been SOME work done to the DS with this patch, as for example the "-searchds" command line option has been changed to "-selectds".

It would just be great if we could see a proper patch list for it such as was done for the main game.

It's not just the AI, it's players themselves who have a problem. No one seems to know how to maintain proper spacing like the bees in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cNcq0vYQ5c

I usually try to get far to the inside to avoid taking huge amounts of damage to my front and rear aero from the AI. And it usually costs me a penalty on the first lap.

It seems like rolling starts are still a bit bugged out.

Unfortunately I didn't record the race, but just had an online GT3 race on SPA with a rolling start - P23 starts in front, and gets dumped RIGHT on top of P1, making P1 crash horribly before start, and me (in 2. place) getting a Stop'n'Go because I'm not holding my position (and I had NO control of the car at that point).

Also, some one rams me in the first corner and I get damage that I have to go to the pit for repairs, but something goes wrong. The game is set up with auto-pit. The "pit board" show me that I have to pit for repairs, so I pit - but it just drives me through the pit (pit board still showing "damages"), and when I exit the pit, the pit board now show "Penalty"!! Okay, so I pit again, and once again I'm taken straight through the pit!

Exitting the pit, I still have damages, but now without a "pit board", so I have to call to pit this round, and finally my damages are repaird.

It seems as if getting both a drive through penalty and a pit to repair in the same lap triggers a bug :(

Just had a quick go round Oulton park International with the BMW Z4 GT3.

Using a gamepad on PC....no improvement for me re the rumble / vibration in fact it feels worse than previously under braking on the trigger.

Still has tree shadow / pop ups round the track.

Smoke from tyres around some corners .....default stable set up.

This was just a quick test but the one thing I was hoping would be improved hasn't been for me (gamepad rumble / vibration).

Visual smoke has nothing to do with the tyre model, only with temperature thresholds that are a bit too low. Only if you show that your tyres are constantly overheating (telemetry screen), we may have a tyre model bug.

Ive started my career again and am currently doing formula rookie, 4th race at Oulton Park. Ive just noticed a cool looking tyre rack in the garage and I cant remember if it was there before. I'm wary of the placebo effect what with all the other little cool details Ive noticed in this patch, plus its getting late here- someone help me out with this? Is this the start of equipment being added to the garage? FYI for the Ai doomsayers, I just lost it, went on the grass before gracefully curving back over the track as a passenger at about a 100mph. I had to chuckle as I did the race driver thing and actually took my hands of the wheel and waitied for the impact- there was an AI coming up and I actually had time to think "I'm really sorry about this pal" before I collected him off the circuit, taking out his front right in the process. If it had been the other way around I'm sure I would have been raging and blinding about the AI.. pot kettle colour checks and all that ;) That how I ended up parked outside my garage for a million years while they fixed stuff..

But why should AI pay attention for erratically driving?

which annoys me the most:
-UI Problems not fixed (No one can properly program a text box (setup save names) on SMS?)
-no longer setup names
-setup save and load still very strange and slow
-filter lobbys are still ridiculous

and yes, much things are better with the patch

i have spend about 2 hours now.

negative first, first corner the ai still is slow and piles up, the more cars the worse it gets. (i kind of expected that still to be the case though)

other then that i am happy. vr performance in vr with my 980 got a little bit better. not leaps and bounds but noticeably. thats great and i will take that. pretty happy with how it runs now to be honest. have to test more at night and with heavy rain, i still expect it to be quite bad in real heavy circumstances, but from what i have seen so far with light rain and evening sessions everything runs ever so slightly better then before.

ai in general is better balanced. biggest improvement for me. it does not seem to be all over the place anymore. that allowed me to get on with my career and a race in the rain where the ai was so unrealisticly fast while i was sliding all over the place that it felt unrewarding unfair and took away the joy. thats fixed and i love it and will now spend some time in a gt career :-)

also the third thing that really annoyed me was the problems with the setups and saving those, that was buggy and annoying but seems to be fixed. really liking this.

the fuel estimation is a nice little touch.

other then that i am just happy taht it seems that i finally can enjoy it in a way i should. great work to everybody at sms.

It doesn't appear so unless there's something I'm overlooking. However, when adding friends to the championship, perhaps in the future we'll be able to add AI drivers using the same method. I'm hoping so since there's so many neat cars that I can't drive in a championship or on tracks I'd love to drive them on.

I can't see using online championships at all but it looks like a very neat and robust addition.

Firstly congratulations to the team for this patch, it really improved the game substantially, much more polished and able to give more encouragement to those who were already discouraged a long time to the point of stopping playing in certain circumstances.

I have not been able to fully exploit the potential after the patch, but I'm enjoying it more than I feel.

For first impressions, I notice an extremely important detail in the game's logistics, the name of the setup that is being used, a really important detail.

The improvement of car sounds

Downshift protection is much better and the way it should work

Online rankings seem to be working much better and fairer. I just have not realized if the voluntary exit of the server implies the loss of points. I would like this confirmation.

I was hoping that reading the icons, especially for a quick reading of the tire temperature would be easier, it was a detail that in time I called attention to their improvement in the colors of these values, and so far nothing has been done to improve the situation.

I will explore the whole update better, but my opinion is quite positive overall. :encouragement:

Just spent the most part of last hour with the 3.01 patch.
Two or three quick things:
- the audio now is A+
- motion blur is thumbs up also
- you fixed all the issues with the shadows (Monza at 16:00 sunny was a pop-up frat party before the patch)
- physics: I've noticed a few cars being more predictable than before, the Audio 90 for example, the 333SP and the 190E too, among the few I tried so far

Still have to try out all the other things... I'm not in a hurry.
Anyway... good job guys. ;)

ai in general is better balanced. biggest improvement for me. it does not seem to be all over the place anymore. that allowed me to get on with my career and a race in the rain where the ai was so unrealisticly fast while i was sliding all over the place that it felt unrewarding unfair and took away the joy. thats fixed and i love it and will now spend some time in a gt career :-)

Geez, that's odd. I had the opposite experience pre-patch. If it started to rain, my enjoyment would plummet since it was an almost automatic win since the AI slowed down so much.

My favourite bashing about combo is the Ginetta GT5 at Knockhill. AI 100/80. Was 1.5 seconds faster in the dry and 2.5 seconds faster in the wet per lap. Did a 15 lapper in light rain and won by 11 seconds (had an off which cost about 15 seconds on the 2nd lap). Even with that off on the 2nd lap, pre-patch I would have lapped the whole field. So there's a definite improvement. Tried a GT4 warmup with the Porsche and was 2 seconds off the leader in the same wet conditions.

Penalties seem to be too aggressive at Knockhill. The uphill chicane is very punishing on not even a cut yet the AI takes a line that real drivers take on the track which would result in a cut and slowdown. The other problem with the slowdown is that you get no indication of how long you need to slow down. So cutting that chicane which may result in a ~0.1 second advantage requires you to slow down and lose a couple of seconds at the very least.

Was great to see despite light rain that the dryer line was emerging after a few laps. Good to see LiveTrack 3 visibly working..

I think they are referring to the fact that SMS said AI was a option. My guess they want to make sure that the ai is balanced on all tracks before adding them in. Maybe they decided not to do it now.

if you just run against AI, you can set penalties to off.
But if you run against real people, that precise restrictions are great. The rule is " 2 wheels inside white line". That goes for everybody. People who leave the track are too fast or try to cut.
Both is not what you want. In pCARS1 many "fast" people where that, who knew the perfect cut zones. This is over for now. Same rules for everyone. DRIVE CLEAN.

Simple way to learn: imagine, there is a wall behind the white line, like in Long Beach. That could help.

Racing the AI is still a complete mess. First, second and third corner is not racing at all. And if you try to use the so called strength of PC2, the Weather and Live Track 3.0 it is absolutely no fun at all, "racing" the AI. Changing weather conditions are the worst with AI. If it gets wet, suddenly they fall back like 10 to 15 seconds per Lap. After changing tyres they are fast as hell in corners and slow down on straights, so you have to take care not crashing into them.

I absolutely don't get it. Of course you didn't say AI is fixed massively in this patch, but maybe you can get my point. Career Mode is useless because racing the AI is absolutely no fun at all. I'm not angry, i'm just sad. This game is at it's current state just a waste of time for me.

Sorry for my bad english. Testing this for three hours because of trying to have fun with it is killing me.

??? car handling was absolutely fine and still is to me.
There were still instances where the mass of the car (translated through the FFB), would become a bit light and unresponsive all of a sudden (mostly mid or on the exit of a corner). With the new update and the cars feeling more planted on the road it seems to have sorted that.

I just did a quick test on the AI first corner bunching issue and sadly it seems not much has changed at least on Nurburgring GP with a full field of 30 cars. Keeping this in perspective after the first corner the AI race really well so it's just a case of avoiding them at that first turn as it was in V1.13.
This isn't a huge issue for me, starting froma sensible place on the grid it is a non issue anyway and other than the first corner the racing with the AI is good.

I don't know if you raced on the Nurburgring combined circuit pre patch, but they are massively improved there.

The handling feels more connected and direct, it's a cmobination of better FFB and something in the physics/tire model I guess. I felt like there was also more traction and sometimes more grip overall. We don't mean that one specific car handles better, but that we feel like we have greater control, a better feel and therefore more confidence in the car.

I too found the 1.2 AI weak in the rain, up until it rained at Imola during a Formula A championship. I don't know how they go so fast in the wet at Imola, crazy really.

Meanwhile I'm on a PS4 and don't have a new patched PC2 yet.

What are your AI and aggression settings? Clio Cup, I tried a Snetterton race that I had finished a few days before that I won easily in career. Light rain with AI 5% down compared to my career race and I was running last in warmup by 3.5 seconds.

It may be car specific since I was 2.5 seconds faster at 100% in a GT5 Knockhill race (which is my favourite combo). At release I was probably 10+ seconds a lap faster - the AI on the straights looked like they weren't getting beyond 2nd gear. I think I'd be parity with them at 105-110% there. They're slow on the last corner but other than that, they hold their own everywhere else on the track.

Changed between 75 and 95. Aggression from 10 to 60. It's not the times the AI set it's the driving behaviour in changing conditions. It feels like the AI amd my conditions on the track are not the same. In some corners i get aquaplaning (right word?) even with rain tyres and the ai is going through the corner as if it is dry or just a little wet. And on the Straights i catch them easily up because they don't even try to reach topspeed. And as i said, if the track gets wet i'm much faster than AI and as the track dries, they are much quicker than me. And i'm sure that this will be different on any track with any car.

In career mode you abolutely can't rely on AI settings. You have to test it in Training and tweak AI strangth till it is in a range that is o.k. to you. On one track AI is very slow, on the next track AI is unbelievable fast. And this is not just me. I thought about it, maybe i'm quicker on some tracks and slower on others. But the AI is completely inconsistent in its strength. In Career Mode you have to change them from race to race, from condition to condition and from car to car.

Think about playing an Action Adventure. And you face opponent A. You kill him on Medium difficulty. next opponent kills you easily, every time. You have to change to easy. Next one is too easy, then again too hard and so on and on. That's not what you want to play, especially when you have to tweak difficulty in Numbers like it is in PC2.

Imagine I still have to decide whether to buy the game or not...
Since I do not play online, an inconsistent AI which drives randomly from track to track, it's not for me.
AI should behave consistently on every track. You can't tweak it forever and in different tracks. It's an unplayable game this way.

I'm not going to buy PC2 until SMS will finally fix the AI behavior.
So I'll wait and see what the devs can achieve during the next patches.

You do realize player skill varies from track to track. Some people are good at one track and suck at another. Its literally impossible to create ai that will be perfect for you on every track. Best you can do is try harder on the tracks you are losing on and practice till you are up to par and stop blaming ai for not driving just like you every where you go.

rolling start (middle of the pack position) with formula renault on Nordschleife (full profile - or at least the one used for track days) will, each time, result in your car crashing into another car (while still in auto control) before start line and before the race actually starts (your car will get damaged so much that it will be impossible to win)

this is with a 23 car grid

Agree.

Don't really get the issue here. I can't think of any racing game I've played (and I've played a heap of 'em) where you don't have to adjust ai level from track to track and car to car. This game is actually better than most because it allows you to change ai settings from race to race within a championship, whereas most of the others lock you into a single setting at the start, such that you find yourself dominating at one track and completely outclassed at another.

but yeah, most of racing games have ruberbanding AI and thats how they deal with varying conditions from one track to another

SMS system is better but not that much since you have to adjust settings before each race which gets annoying real fast

btw SMS, can the assist race line be narrowed ? currently its so huge that its wider than some tracks lol

Had an amazing GT3 race at Silverstone last night, one of those times when everything - FFB, sound, physics, AI, lighting, weather - all just clicked into place. There are times when PC2 provides these perfect moments and when it does there is nothing to touch it.

Agreed nothing tops it when it comes to immersion IMO.

One important item that missed the patch notes was an update to Drafting - specificlly Side Drafting , which is enabled or working more correctly now.. Not perfect, but at least sling-shotting makes sense now. Try it at Lemans or Daytona. Matter of fact, try Lemans at 100% using LMP1 cars so the AI is using low downforce setups and watch the AI draft passing in a race. :)

Yes, I meant to mention about drafting, it's spot on now, you can feel the effect getting stronger the closer you are to the guy in front, and even a small draft coming out of a corner can make a difference to exit speed. Just feels 'right' not an addon effect.
