Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. I did search but no related results.

We had a league race this past Saturday night, and for the first time in many weeks we decided to try usingthe Dedicated Server rather than a P2P room for the race.

Now, the main purpose for using the Dedicated Server is that it is supposed to IMPROVE network connections, and REDUCE latency issues. Unfortunately that is not what we are finding.

Our league has members from all over North America, as well as Australia and New Zealand. THe serveris located in western U.S., so is somewhat central to all members. Average direct ping from my location to the server is between 80 - 90ms Round Trip Delay.

On race night, the in game pings while connected ot the Dedicated server were showing in excess of 300ms for everyone inthe room,a nd everyone was experiencing excessive lag.

We abandoned the Dedicated server, built a P2P room with all the same drivers (21 total) and our in game ping were in the 120 - 150ms range for everyone, with minimal lag issues.

The dedicated server has a bandwidth of 1Gb upload and download, so it's local bandwidth is not an issue.

Can anyone explain why the DS would have such a high ping in game, while it is more than acceptable outside of the game? Also, why would it be nearly double what we had in the P2P room?

I am a networking specialist myself, with more than 30 years experience in the field, and I am at a loss to explain this. My only thought is that it is something to do with Steam, or perhaps the netcode on the DS itself? I need to get this fixed so that we can actually use and gain the benieftis of our DS (stats files, etc.).

Hmmmm .. I noticed on our DS (using -selectds) that we also had bad lag compared to our p2p experience ..
Ours is based in Europe & I race in the states but my ping was fine ,it was some of the euro guys warping and rubber banding ,disappearing coming back ect... ...

I'm curious as well ... seems like something's up with the DS ...

I also noticed these issues a lot more lately. Based in germany with a good connection to the DS (15-25 ms) as well.

Any reason why ping isn't displayed in ms in the online lobbies? I'm always that green wedge thing, but I know that isn't 100% true.
