Hi guys,

exceeding the track limits, will generate time penalties. But how does this work in more detail?

* There seem to be different amount of time penalties - 3sec, 5sec and 35sec! How are these penalties decided? Especially, what causes the 35sec penalty? And what causes drive through penalty?

* How much of the car needs to be over the line? All four wheels, just the outer two?

* At some corners it seems that there is more tolerance for exceeding the track limit than others, or?

* How many times can you cross the line, before the penalty is finally given?

Does anyone know for a fact how all this works?

Thanks, that explains a lot regarding what's counted as exceeding track limits. But how are the penalties calculated?

There's an algorithm that calculates how much time you possibly gained during your off-track "event" (this will be adjusted for the next patch btw.).
How the algorithm exactly works is confidential though.

A drive through penalty will be handed out when you collected more penalty seconds than allowed. The amount of allowed penalty seconds can be set by the host. The default valuy is 5s IIRC.

Ok, that explains the 2,3 and 5sec penalties I've got. But the 35sec time penalty, by just exceeding the white really surprised me. It seemed way to harsh. I was no way near making that much time by just exceeding the white line. Maybe I had a few 2 and 3sec penalties before, and still exceeding track limits which finally gave one big one to make me learn my lesson? :-) Or do you find another explanation for a 35sec penalty?

Was it a timed race or xx laps?

i think the 35 sec. penalty is for exceeding the limit of allowable penalties. will be replaced by a Drive Thru in the next patch.

I thought it's already done this way?

In my experience if you ignore a few short penalties you get the 35 second hit.

it's possible, i've only ever gotten one large penalty, same day as patch 3 release and it happened when I spun out and went across the grass backwards at Imola.

Recently I saw a driver who get DT having already 13 secs. He said the first 10secs was for speeding in pits. Then I saw 13 when he went wide a turn. At this point he has been penalized with DT.

I think it would be now when and how penalties are being applied.

I've had both (not in the same game though). Both 35sec penalty and drive through penalty. But I'm not sure which penalty is chosen when repeatedly exceeding the track limits. Maybe is has to do wheather the drive through penalty is activated or not?

Since we get those 35 sec penalties from time to time in our RX races as well, I had the same theory (especially, since you can't get a drive through in RX), so I increased the allowable penalty time to 30 sec. However, we still got those 35 sec penalties, even if a driver hasn't had a single penalty before. So this theory seems to be wrong, unfortunately.

I think those huge penalties are a bug in terms of the gained time calculation (IIRC, we had to report those during devolopment).
