Let's talk about Bump Stops (and telemetry) a bit...

Question: How do you interpret the telemetry correctly in order to calculate what your bump stop settings should be?

While testing the RUF CTR 3 at Watkins Glen I could hear what sounded like the chassis scraping on the asphalt in numerous places despite and good high ride height so I recorded some laps with telemetry and then watched them back. I noticed we have these BUMP, TRAVEL and HEIGHT metrics for each wheel and I'm assuming that when the HEIGHT says zero, that means you're bottoming out? Or are you only bottoming out when both your TRAVEL and your HEIGHT say zero?

Assuming we know how to work out when we're bottoming out and we can see which wheel it's occuring on, how do we know how much Bump Stop to add? Or is it case of trial and error? Perhaps more to the point, is it actually necessary? It was happening to me lots while driving around Watkins Glen but not once did I notice it impeding my preformance or causing any understeer/ oversteer. Does it actually damage the car over time? Is anyone able to explain how to use the TRAVEL and HEIGHT metrics to improve setups (and no, I don't mean saying TRAVEL means this and HEIGHT means that, I'm talking about how to actually use them!)?

Somewhere out there someone probaly knows.

I don't like my cars bottoming. But it happens. I've made posts to clarify, if you search it. Thanks.

I am not sure, but I assume that in the Telemetry HUD, the shock travel will turn red when the bump stop is hit.

Yep, I've got my f1 car sitting on its front end at speed and they highlight in white, but turn red if hit too hard.

The red marker will also appear when the bodywork hits the track.

In the small number of cars I have tuned already, the body of the car will always hit the track before suspension travel runs out and you hit the bump-stops, even if you set the bump-stops up to be as long as possible. A good example is the Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4 at Watkins Glen Short. Going through the carousel you will hear the front left bodywork scrape the ground (along with seeing the red marker appear), but if you watch the suspension travel during this corner is never gets anywhere near 0.0.

But it could take a month of Sundays to get right. Re: tuning grind
