They ban it for 2021 but allow it now?
    Smells like favoritism to me...

Why? Unless it's deemed unsafe it's very unfair to ban something that is within the rules in the current season. You can't willy nilly ban something because you don't like the loophole. It isn't any different than the double diffuser or f-duct. They were not banned during the season they were introduced, but the firts opportunity (meaning the next season)

From what I understood it's not like they banned it now after seeing Mercedes using it on track, the 2021 rules that were approved last year already have regulations that prevent systems like DAS:

I really do wonder if they are using the DAS system to keep attention off some other part of the car. The way they showed it off so early in testing knowing there was broadcast coverage and had a press conference scheduled with Lewis and James Allison, gets you wondering.

One thing about the controls on the Mercedes with DAS, do we still call it a steering wheel or do we now have to call it a yoke?

It's not quite that simple. To my understanding it hasn't been outlawed because one team complained or "the FIA tried to play favourites", but rather it won't be legal under the new-for-2021 technical regulations due to the way they've been written.

This is from the BBC website: (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/51584557)

This is allowed under the 2020 rules because the relevant clause says only: "The front wheels are adjusted solely by the steering and under the full control of the driver."

But the 2021 rules contain a clause which says: "The alignment of the front wheels must only take place through a constant function of a rotational movement of a single steering wheel."
...You've seen how I react to people, make them feel good, make them think that anything's possible. If I make them laugh along the way, sue me. And I don't do it so they turn round and go 'Thank you David for the opportunity, thank you for the wisdom, thank you for the laughs.' I do it so, one day, someone will go 'There goes David Brent. I must remember to thank him.'

I think this rule is so precise to rule out this special system, they must have known a long time, that Mercedes is working on such thing.
Otherwise it would have no sense. In the last 100 years there was no other function in steering. So why develop such a rule
