But.. but.. what about 18K gold plugs?! They're totally worth it, right? The shady dude in the audio store told me that they're worth their weight in gold and totally legit!

Well, if they are true 18k and not just plated metal... at least you'll have some spare gold you can sell when you're in a pinch.

All this talk of speakers, cables and amps. As a musician and sound engineer I can tell you categorically that home hi-fi has a very coloured sound. Generally over hyped bass and a mid scoop. Also the room you listen in has a huge effect on the sound, as much if not more than the speakers themselves, given they are half decent and somewhat full range.

There is so much hyperbole in advertising, don't get sucked in!

That's what I said too a couple of posts back. I just hooked up my Capella CP-3000 speakers (engineered by Bose in their good days) to a Behringer iNuke P/A amp and if not for the annoyingly loud fan and wanting to have 5.1 for movies... I'd probably rather get a mixer or something to switch input devices and just use that Behringer P/A amp instead. I personally prefer a neutral sound with an as flat as possible response curve and add an EQ to that in order to adjust the tone for my room and my ear, because that's much easier to work with than factory colored stuff which often has a limited EQ range as well. If only I had known this when I bought that Yamaha AV Receiver of mine MANY moons ago in the early 2000s, and I did but I never realized that it was colored to such extreme extends and rather at the time expected small deviations here and there.

In the end, just choose stuff that sounds nice to you, how you like it to sound.

It's still true that more expensive will sound better, but it's about a) how much more expensive and b) what component exactly. €500/m cables won't sound any better than €25/m cables, but €500 headphones for sure will sound better than €25 headphones.

    Good info!!!
    My comments:
    1) 100% that if you like it... that's it...
    2) All the stuff that I have cost me a six pack of beers (speakers). I don't have the money to invest more..would love to!!
    3) A very close cousin that is quite known in his field (he is a guitarist, he has played in concerts in 2 G3 concerts -steve vai, joe satriani, etc-), he is also a sound engineer... he makes hand made tube amps (he makes the almost all by himself, I think he buys the tubes in The Netherlands)... and the sound that those things make.. are awesome!!!!!
    4) Really????? 18K gold plugs???.. like the usd 500 hdmi cable once Denon sold?

At least for 6,5mm jack cables they're not that rare at all. You can have gold, gold plated, silver and nickel plated. You can even filter for them.

No, I don't have gold or silver plated plugs. Only nickel plated.
