    Cheap 'VR' setup for Project CARS on PC

    Want to experiment with VR but don't want to shell out on an expensive headset just yet?

    Requirements:

    1. Decent smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S6, iPhone 6, etc.).;
    2. Intugame desktop client;
    3. Intugame phone app (Google Play, App Store);
    4. Something to attach your smartphone to your head, e.g. Cardboard, ColorCross, or other cheap mobile VR set.

    How to set it up:

    1. Make sure PC and phone are on the same WiFi network;
    2. Start the desktop client;
    3. Start the app;
    4. After it's found the PC: boot your favorite game/sim;
    5. Hit play on the app;
    6. Put phone in headset and put it on;
    7. Profit!

    It streams the game/sim in stereoscopic 3D to the phone. Lag will depend on image and network quality. Uses mouse look for headtracking, but they're considering to add FreeTrack.

    Tried it in Project CARS, works quite nicely and fast, though Project CARS doesn't support mouse look (so no looking around). Works great for FPS as well (and mouse look works there).

    Another way to do this is using TrinusGyre/TriDef/FreeTrack, but that's quite painful to setup, this is much easier.

    This looks great. I already have a couple of those phone holders I bought a few months ago to mess around with cardboard apps. I am going to try this tonight. I also have a TrackIR so i should be able to use that for looking around a little.

    Thank you.

    Keep in mind that this is just a fun way to experiment with VR, it's not a real alternative for an Oculus Rift setup. But it's great if you have a decent smartphone and a cardboard or other cheap holder. It's good fun.

    I was able to setup opentrack, was using it with pcars, iracing, and assetto corsa until I bought triples. I posted a quick run down on YouTube to help people out. If I can find that phone holder you bought I'm totally trying this. Even if it isn't perfect I do think it would be fun to play with.

    Here is the link to the video I made. https://youtu.be/m3Dc57SYPjM

    BTW, thanks for the idea

    I don't see a scenario were smartphone vr via streaming wouldn't making me nausea in a few minutes thanks to the massive lag. EDIT: missed that you can't look around yet, in that case it might be bearable.

    I used the cheap smartphone on the head for head tracking in Project Cars and Elite Dangerous but got nausea pretty fast. Changed to a EdTracker with zero lag and can now play for hours without even a hint of nausea.

    Since every stream from PC to another device solution I tried yet (Steam in house streaming, Nvidia's streaming to Android via the Moonlight app) had more lag than said smartphone headtracking I doubt that a full vr experience would really be enjoyable that way.

    Head tracking via TrackIR, EdTracker and probably Sony Eye though is fantastic especially if you don't have triples.

    I tried the app but was not aware of the 5 min limit. Those went away while setting up the options. I was able to see it in action for a few seconds. Found it lagging too much on wifi. Didn't try usb link and not sure if it was proper stereoscopic 3d. Overall, I am not sure to buy this app. So far I am not impressed with 3d on cardboard demos and videos. I am a bit excited for vr and just hope consumer version is nothing like this.

    Rift, etc. is a completely different level than this. This is basically just duplicated/fake 3D streamed over WiFi. You'll get better results using a cable, but image quality will still be fairly low res. But it's nice to play around with, without spending a bucketload of cash on the real deal.
