4K up-scaling of the Game to display on a 4K TV..

But it's NOT 4K resolution In the Game.

anyway, that's my read on the specs...
From my understanding they are doing the games in something like 1800p and upscaling that to 4k which is quite a significant upgrade to 1080p.

For us that don't have a 4k TV we should be able to see higher framerates and/or better graphics in but in 1080p when playing on the P4P.

That's what I keep wondering. Who cares about 4K output if the game is still rendered at 1080p?

The improved frame rates are a function of the improved hardware in the PS4 Pro. All games will benefit from this. As for improved graphics, that will depend on the publisher. There's a thread in the technical support section with more posts on the topic:

At this point the PS4 "Pro" just looks like an absolute cluster f%ck. It looks like it was designed by a 5 year old. Sony are talking about charging developers $$ to patch older games for the Pro version. You know what that means - - - - micro transactions. Want 60 fps?? $5. Want upgraded textures? $5.

I honestly think Sony really screwed this up big time. This new console just isn't powerful enough to even bother. It offers what? ...... upscaling? All this hype for upscaling?

It's like buying a mid ranged PC with major restrictions. "You know this console can run these games at 60 fps, but we can't let you do that ........ not for free". You know that's what's going to happen ..... I mean it doesn't take a genius to figure it out where this is going.

Being a PS4 fan myself I have to say I am very confused as to why sony would make such a small upgrade with lackluster features. What confuses me even more is we all know it will sell like hot cakes because let's get real ....... sony know most console gamers are clueless and will throw money around at anything and everything. All they have to do is tell you it's the definitive, ultimate or premium way to play and watch the zombies line up.

I never thought I would go back to PC or Xbox, but right now it looks like I might just do that. What the hell is wrong with this generation of consoles? Maybe it's the consumers that are to blame? I dunno, but what a lackluster console.

A PS Pro update would probably bork Fanatec support, so I'd prefer things left as they are, thankyouverymuch.

What Sony is doing recently with the PS4 really has me scratching my head. Are they finally trying to make money with the PS4 in the worst possible ways because they were making little to no profit on each sale until now? Are they clueless or do they just don't care about their customers? Pushing away part of their user base with forbidding Fanatec wheel support, not allowing Fallout 4/The Witcher mods, a badly thought-out 'upgrade'. It seems like they really want people to leave.

I'm just kind of dumping my thoughts here. None of this is meant to be a counter point. I just thought you guy's made some good comments that form a good jumping off point.

IMO, everyone is following Apple these days. Regardless of whether you like Apple or not, they're insanely profitable, and they pulled some huge plays in the early 2000s. Everyone wants their kind of success.

What Apple did to the wireless carriers has had repercussions throughout every single industry where customers are part of a "platform". Sony are trying (desperately) to copy every play they can. Apple customers line up for incremental upgrades (the "S" version of every iPhone since the 3S), so why shouldn't Sony take a play right out of that book and release a PS4 Pro? Likewise with the Fanatec debacle. Sony were slow on the uptake, but it's clear that they want customers locked in to their platform in every way possible. Have a look at how the Fanatec situation is unfolding. Everyone is tight lipped, because they don't want to get kicked off the platform, but why is Fanatec developing a PS4 exclusive wheel option? Because Sony is dictating terms, and they've said that PS4 compatible wheels must be exclusive to the PS4 in the console space. Same for Thrustmaster (TX vs T300RS) and Logitech (G29 vs G920).

The problem for Sony is that this isn't the phone market. I believe there were unique circumstances that came together for Apple. They showed up in the phone market at just the right time, and there are masses of phone users who know next to nothing about mobile platforms, their history, and their pros and cons. They make decisions driven by image and marketing, with a smaller informed segment who have actual reasons for their choice. The gaming market is totally different. Gamers tend to be, on the whole, a lot more informed. What percentage of gamers participate in a forum of some kind or another? What percentage of gamers read reviews before purchasing a game? How do those percentages compare to the phone market) I don't know many gamers who just blindly spend their money on the next product available to them. Most at least check IGN/Gamespot. Granted, those outlets tend to be in the pocket of the platforms, but plenty of people can read between the lines.

Bottom line is, I don't know that this is going to work out for Sony the way that they're betting it will.
