Also saw on Youtube videos that the 1080 runs 10 degrees C hotter than 1060 - more dsp [cuda] or what ever the chips are called

If a crazy powered CPU was used like Xeon / 6950 X would this have any bearing on running higher settings over say a very good but by comparsion lesser i7 4790k.

Is the single core performance really important? - So over clocking +20% [with appropriate cooling of course]

Would a big bump in system RAM really help too - EG - 16 GB / 32 GB - Would any of this bump GPU performance?

Please clarify - By VR - you mean virtual reality - eg - headset / goggles/?

So you have an 1060, 980 and 650
See my signature.. 1060 (6G), 980 and a 750Ti.. with various 4th gen Intel processors

Temps.... basically most GPUs now have decent thermal throttles and are either set to go to a specific temperature then throttle to hold it, or a specific power level and hold it (or a combination of the two)

If I stick the fans at 100% on the 1060 and run something like the Unigine Valley benchmark.. it stays under 60C.. but it is rather loud... (left on auto the fan goes to about 57% and the temps stay around 73C, so still below the limit.. so it never throttles due to temperature)

CPU vs GPU performance.. swings and roundabouts.. in some games single thread performance is all, in others not so much... games should be moving towards more multithreaded performance... but plenty will still favour speed over threads. There are some interesting reviews of the new AMD Ryzen showing some interesting gaming benchmarks.. which do show just how all over the place things can be as far a speed vs threads goes.

Ah yes I see your signature with the 3 machines - I see an H81!!! - And a 4790T - Low TDP / base frquency

OK Mad Al have you raced online with Project Cars - with your 1060 - I found AOR - Apex Online Racing - People racing together in teams and having full seasons and commentary - It's quite hilarious but very cool!

You may know this but [maybe not] I just read that GTX 1070 & GTX 1080 are SLI compatible but download codes are needed from nVidia or who ever.

Most of my online was during dev, I hardly ever bother otherwise.. (couple of random drop in races shortly after launch.. with a gamepad!)
There are plenty of organised leagues, some take themselves way too seriously, some are much more laid back.. I'm definitely not the type who takes this all too seriously, I play games to relax, not get wound up..
