You probably already know this, but lots and lots of thin coats is the best way to paint something like this. Don't be tempted to lay the paint on thick as it's not only likely to run, it's also likely to have a different texture and sheen to other areas. Treat painting like a marathon, not a sprint. Light dustings are the order of the day, and let it dry fully between coats. Working in a heated environment will help.

Ideally you'd be using a compressor and spray gun, but if you're using aerosol cans, don't be tempted to get the very last bit of paint out of the tin. It'll likely splatter and undo hours of previous work. Flip the cans upside down after a spraying session and give them a quick spray onto some old newspaper to clear the nozzle and stop it clogging.

Have you thought about taking these to a body shop and getting them sprayed professionally in a proper booth with proper equipment? It might not work out much more expensive, depending how much paint you're buying. Aerosols are expensive.!

(all this assumes you are using aerosols, btw).

You might already know all this but I spent five years doing the type of thing you're doing here at University, so thought I'd pass on my experience. Hope it helps!

I still fear your filler might crack due to temperature fluctuations, the different properties of MDF and plastic, slamming your door or driving vibrations, or just because your music is too loud .

Hope it doesn't, but be prepared. Some of my old MDF product model prototypes (filled and sprayed to look like mass-produced injection-moulded plastic items) developed cracks and splits over time just sitting in a box in the loft.

Looks like a fun project - looking forward to seeing them finished and fitted!

I love doing projects like this. I recently made a set of three lamps from old letterpress print blocks. It's a great creative way to unwind, and deeply satisfying and fulfilling at the end.
