    Did you box the subwoofer?

    Check the speaker specs, stick a port on it

    It was boxed but the wife didn't want the loss of space in the booth...so i made a parcel shelf and put it in there...for the purpose i intended it for (more bass) it works just fine
    What exactly do you mean by "stick a port on it" ?

    Ah I see.
    You could build a box on the back of the parcel shelf to enclose it, but you're losing out on the boot space again.
    The sealed enclosure stops the pressure waves created by the back of the subwoofer cone interfering with the waves created by the front of the cone.
    Also, you have the adjacent speakers that will be affected by the pressure created by the back of the sub.

    A tube/slot of a particular dimension will resonate. It'll get a standing wave in it, thereby amplifying that particular frequency. The dimensions of the port will determine the frequency of the wave. So you can effectively boost low end bass.
    You can tune the port to minimise droning as well.
