Hydrogen burning ICE is not as efficient as fuel-cell electric. So, and considering electric motors can achieve >80-85% efficiency, if we find a way to economically capture/produce and store hydrogen, we're still looking at electric motor propulsion.

What are the major issues with capturing and storing hydrogen?

hydrogen is very volatile by its self in a tank if the tank ruptures if i remember correctly for one

There are multiple ways. The least energy intensive right now is extracting it from natural gas, which ends up spewing co2 anyway. You can split water but that takes a lot of energy, so the net energy gain is minimal.

The problem is storing hydrogen long term. It has to be stored in very high pressure, which is fine, but the hydrogen molecules are so small, they permeate through the walls of the tank!

I did read an article recently of carbon nanostructures discovered to trap and contain the hydrogen long term with no leakage, but that's all laboratory prototype stuff.

Yeah the problem is that the generation of energy must be "clean" as well.

I wouldn't have a problem with a world where most city cars and public transportation were electric with the fun cars using ICEs powered by renewable fuels like ethanol. But the environmentalists are radical people, they want to ban everything. And I refuse to believe there's only an ecological aspect to this push. Politics and economy are as important if not more. I just need to dwelve deeper into it to figure it out.

In general I tend to stay away from most Green Parties since they're just barely below Greenpeace level in their aggression against those who "attack" the environment.

Green Parties Green peace hippies vegans and activists of the sort are rarely scientists and engineers.
NFI to influence politics in a good direction until something better comes along.
And a particular tech never gets a big push unless someone/ big energy/ politicians have figured a way to make money from it.
Even then it's priced so high as the adaptation is minimal and slow.
