I made some further adjustments to the AI and they aren't leaving me like I'm racing a Prius anymore. It's good enough for me to start near the back of the field and make it up to P2/P3 before doing something stupid and finishing in P4. As I become better I'll adjust the AI. Good fun so far, I don't think I could go back to Forza 7 now for fear of adopting some bad driving habits.
I'm not that new in racing here but not that old neither. And still often, this thread is really a lot of help discovering new tactics and skills. I'm into adjusting AI lately and it's better. Thanks ya'll.

Sure, practice and more practice. That works for me. It looks like I was driving such car when i started.

Blind/ aimless practice is a waste of time. You repeat and reinforce poor technique and don't improve in any aspect.
Well, you may learn a faster line in a particular track but the skill won't transfer to another track or race scenario.
I recommend practice while actively focusing on one technique, eg where to look, or turn-in, or throttle application on exit. Once you've corrected that aspect of your technique, focus on another.
Soon it becomes second nature to the point where less of your brain bandwidth (to steal a Joe Rogan term) is used on basics and you're reading traffic behaviour, monitoring your tyres/fuel, calculating your pit stop...
