Just yesterday on cyber monday I bought the Witcher 3 GOTY edition on the Xbox One store for just 20 EUR, that's the full game and both it's expansions, AKA all DLC content that's available. A game you can get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out. I know the game is from 2015 but sjesus, talk about value for money when you compare that with a bare bone standard edition tripple A title that just released for 70 EUR and where you need to shelve out another 10 EUR for a deluxe edition and another 30 EUR for a season pass. And the game still looks great, once I'm done with Assassin's Creed Origins I will dig myself into this title. As far as new releases go, I think I'm done buying new games for a while. I'd normally look forward to Far Cry 5 a lot but guess what, I didn't even complete 4 yet and barely touched Primal. While the dust settles with the loot box scandal and the industry for sure needs to adapt I think I will sit back and play a bunch of older unfinished games. By the time I'm done with that I will be able to buy a Far Cry 5 GOTY edition for 20 EUR or so.

Another advantage of not playing the latest games is that the games are fully patched up and functional. Sorry for Project CARS 2 but this is the perfect example why gamers should just pass on a title at launch. I got completely blocked in my second season of career (Ginetta GT5 tire temp problems vs AI not having them) when I was playing version 1.0, my career progress got halted just like that. And I couldn't even abandon the season and start a new one. Now soon 3.0 will be out and this game will be more the way it should have been at launch. Now don't get me wrong, I understand the complexity of this game is WAY beyond that of other racing titles on consoles and once it will be EOL and fully patched up this will be the best racing game I ever played. And I also understand that before launch there is only so much you can do, the majority of the bugs in such a complex game can only be found when the masses are playing the game. I bought the game full price at launch twice (Digi Deluxe for XBox and Ultra for PS4) but after playing for a few weeks I'm basically "waiting" until the game is fixed and I can start playing. Well not really waiting, plenty of other games to play meanwhile but you get what I mean. New launch games always will have problems and need fixes while at the same time they cost full price. 1-2 year old GOTY games will be fully patched up and include all the DLC for 1/3rd-1/5th of the original price. So it's just a matter of resisting the temptation to play the latest games but instead just go with games 1-2 years old. And since both XBox One and PS4 are already out for 4 years or so, there is a rich catalog of content available.
You have to consider that the economic environment is not static. If enough gamers decide to stop buying release titles, that will have an impact on the industry. Publishers seek to obtain a return on investment, and launch sales at full price + DLC present the greatest economic opportunity. If launch sales diminish, we could see any number of outcomes.

    - Fewer titles developed/released
    - More publishers move toward the EA model (microtransactions, pay-to-win, etc)
    - Production quality/game scope reduced (e.g., multi-player only games)
    - Some unforeseen impact that we can't even dream of

The strategy of waiting for GOTY releases makes sense for all the reasons you listed (less expensive, fewer bugs), but I'm not at all convinced that it will incentivize game developers and publishers to go back to the good ol' days of better quality releases and lower up-front pricing. Not when EA is printing money like it's going out of style. The only thing preventing all game developers from going that direction is principle, and if we've learned anything over the last couple of years, it's that we can't rely on "good principles" to keep things sane.

One can simply stop buying EA published titles as a start

That being said, one more NBA copy sold 3 days ago to a friend. I told him but.. guess the vast majority really doesn't care and parents just give kids what they want these days as they're just as oblivious (starting on education).

So, it's all fine and stuff but unless this becomes common practice I don't think it'll change much from current state.

Like I use to say, certain business will never bust because lack of customers...

Never known what these loot boxes are before I read this thread; I just googled the meaning and I am sure these boxes 100% relate to gambling activities, as you never know what's inside. Here's the list of the most secure USA gambling sites btw https://casinobetsites.com/usa-gambling-sites/ .

If you look at NFS Payback it's pathethic how the entire car upgrade structure is designed around slot machines. I mean how much more obvious can it be, there are literally slot machines spinning around in full screen hoping you get a good upgrade card for your car. The upgrade system is about sheer luck (augmented by cards which can be bought by... microtransactions) and not about letting the player cleverly weighing off to increase a car's performance vs. handling and such. And of course cards are not exchangable between cars, no that would be bad for EA business. In fact if you buy a car, let's say a Mazda MX-5, you even need to choose for which of the 5 car classes it needs to be (racer, runner, drift, drag, offroad). You cannot exchange a car's class because that would be bad for EA business. At the core the game is not as bad as the reviews say, the map is enjoyable, the car handling arcade but okay, and the visual customization of cars is still the best there is. But aaargh... everything else is polluted by EA's intrusive business model.

Now all that is mainly for singleplayer which is what I do 95% of the time anyway. But for multiplayer things are a bit different and it depends how many players are still playing the game. Some titles like TitanFall 1 and Star Wars Battlefront 1 are full-out multiplayer games and the majority of the community has probably moved on to the successor games.
I can't agree more, with this generation of consoles the only games I purchased at launch (it was infact a pre-order) was RDR2 and PC1. Rockstar are the only game developer I have confidence in. They are not immune from the pay to win model with the online component of their games but I have never bothered with that element. I always buy games second hand or, GOTY edition if I feel the developers deserve my hard earned cash. SMS, sad to say got the same treatment for PC2 after the state PC1 was at launch. PC2 to be fair wasn't much better, but I purchased PC2 GOTY edition after support ceased. I felt SMS deserved to see my money due to the effort and transparency shown in fixing the issues with the game.

As a motorsports fan I'd love to have the f1 game but unfortunately codemasters pretty much release the same game every year with a few new (broken) features, release some patches that fix the same bugs that have been present since they got the f1 license and are still in the game. Moreover they have no transparency and fail to listen to community feedback. I sincerely hope that SMS don't get dragged down to the same level now they are owed by codemasters. Only time will tell.

Finally, rant nearly over, I doubt I'll be purchasing the next Xbox. I have been had all the xbox consoles to date. 2 original xbox's, due to an optical drive failure, 2 360's that suffered RROD, and an elite. My original xbox one lasted the distance, but I upgraded to the one x specifically for PC2. After a year that died, hard drive failure. Seeing as it would cost half the price of a new console to fix (out of warranty by a week) with no new warranty, I purchased a new one x after much consideration. To be fair the dead 360's and one x I repaired so my partner/friends and I can play co-op games together. It seems the hardware isn't much better than the software. I will be waiting to see what happens with the new xbox, it looks like it may compete with a new gaming PC, at launch at least, at a very competitive price. I won't be moving to Sony as that seems like swapping the Devil for Lucifer! Ultimately I think after some 15 years away from PC gaming it's time to go back and abandon consoles. That way I have an upgrade path, triple monitors for sim racing not to mention a better choice of wheels and pedals. I have a feeling it's a choice I won't regret...
