Gpu getting hot in alt tab

Graphic card is generating a lot of heat heat (90C+) more than I've ever seen with any game. (I am actually running at VSYNC 60hz forced now but this doesn't change anything).

The irony is that the heat is generated while the game is in the background or at the pause screen. When I switch back to the game, temps are immediately dropping by 25C.

What are your specs? 90 degrees while hot is still safe for most cards.

Are you running the game windowed/full screen?

Its an Asus GTX 780 DC2 series. While the temp may not be a problem the game seems to be running maxed out when alt tabbed. In game its fine at about 60C. I'm running window mode but even pausing has the same effect.
    Just wondering why is all

have you tried looking at the GPU usage via MSI Afterburner or something similar and see what the card is up to when alt-tabbed ?

The vram goes from 22% in game but 47% when alt tabbed. Gpu usage 100%. I have vsync on at 60 fps. It seems to me the game disregards everything and just goes for the highest framerate it can when alt tabbed.

Can you try full screen and then alt-tab see if this changes anything?

In Windows task manager if you are W10 you could possibly see what is using the GPU % too.

Sounds like you may have the answer already though in that when it is out of focus vsync is ignored.

Edit - similar thing seen on other game:

You could try adding -fpscap 60 to the Steam launch options and see if that keeps it at 60 when you alt tab

if you / a friend owns a compressor, clean your GPU and other parts of your PC with compressed air.
There can be a thick film of dust on your components.
Doing that once a year is suggested for gamers.
