Unplayable with controller (FFB), How do people play ?

So I've downloaded the PC2 demo for PC and playing it with an XBOX controller as I do with Forza. Im loving everything about the game (thats on show in the demo) and I've also managd to tweak the controller settings.

However, the lack of trigger vibration completely ruins it for me and is the only thing keeping me from buying it.

It's completely impossible to know whether you've locked up or lost traction in a corner. Getting on the brakes fast and hard is impossible and just getting of the grass can take forever. Having to rely on wheather smoke or not is coming from the tyres to determine if i've locked up or is skidding is ofc impossible.

I have no idea how anyone could play this game or even less be close to competitive? Anyone playing on a controller having any tricks or insight on how is can be played ???

Dunno about tricks, I just use a (360) controller on the default settings, and my ears - the audio cues are enough for me to have a feel for when I'm locking/locked up. I don't think I'm the worlds fastest, but recently I've been taking part in some time trials over at GTP and I'm usually within half a second of the pace with a car/track combo I like.

    You can try these settings:

    Steering Deadzone: 2
    Steering Sensitivty: 10
    Brake Sensitivity: 25
    Speed Sensitivity: 87
    Controller Damping: 35

I found that several drivers using gamepads were using similar settings.

Thanks. The problem, however, is the lack of vibration feedback for traction.

The recent patch made the controller feel more lively then what it already was. It's probably the most informative controller vibration out of all the sims. All I know is that the controller vibrates a hell of a lot, probably not the triggers though cant tell with all the vibration going on.

Going to play now to see.

Unfortunately, the OP is using the Demo which is several builds behind the current patch.

To the OP, if you are a PC user, you can always purchase on Steam to test it out for up to 2 hours. That way you can see if the current patch provides the vibrations you desire.

And keep an eye out for an affordable FFB wheel if you play a lot of racers. If you already put 100’s of hours into racing each year, it is time to consider the next step.

Someone else was going to say it if I didn’t.

I too like trigger FFB. It conveys grip very convincingly.

PC2 is passable on controller and you can be competitive with one, but it isn’t optimal. Sims rarely are. Simcade racers often catch the most realistic feel out of a controller. We don’t drive with controllers so we kinda have to break physics to provide the best driving experience for controllers.

If you haven’t tried Dirt Rally, check it out. It somehow captures realism and great controller feel. It is a rare feat.

I promise PC2 is very good on a controller once you adapt to it, but it doesn’t come to you, and it is what it is. Either you come to appreciate the customability or you get upset that they didn’t get their default settings to your liking and you never play it again. The physics are very fair, the tire modeling is amazing, and eventually you will tune into how the feedback is conveyed in this game, and forget about the trigger vibration.

Edit: Also, this game is HARD if you aren’t already a veteran racer and even perhaps, if you are. It took me weeks in way slower cars than the demo offers to even get the basics down. It took me time to realize the game wasn’t cheating me, it just slapped me every time I tried to cheat reality based driving techniques. I can see myself blaming the controller feel for that if I weren’t on a wheel... which just made me feel like a bad driver. I play 3rd person with the controller sometimes from the couch for a change of pace. Once you know the physics, the controller just starts to work and properly inform. I get similar times on both.

Every time someone mentions that they're using a controller, there's always someone else advising the wheel. Every bloody time.

Since @Vbroms is on PC, although playing with a controller, I suppose it's a different perspective. That being said, this series was fundamentally designed to be played on PC and with a driving wheel. On the other hand, being also commercialised on console, it shouldn't even be buyable without a wheel pack. Controller support on Project CARS has always been unacceptable. On Gran Turismo, by comparison, controller support is absolutely fantastic. First, the game is console-exclusive. Second, it's aimed at all kinds of players, be it young kids who play with the controller, or older people that may prefer a driving wheel.

Everyone should be able to play and have fun with these games. Specificity has always been this game's saddest aspect.
