Arena Essex Raceway Is Shutting Down

Once perhaps the greatest short track venue on Europe and host of the legendary Firecracker Banger Racing events, even featuring on Top Gear and Fifth Gear a few times, is finally closing down. Entries became smaller in number as did the fans, earlier in the year they were forced to sell the very land the venue sat upon to stay open but it was not enough. This is place the place that sparked my love of motorsport and I have so many fantastic memories there. The final event will be Firecracker on the 4th of November. I urge anyone who can make it to go to Firecracker, it is your last chance to experience this great venue and I would like to see it get the send off it deserves

I'm actually genuinely quite emotional about this, it's like losing a close friend

And one of my most spectacular memories of the place (see if you can spot a little young Tank in the bottom corner of the screen ):

Aw, man, that's bad news. Although originally from Essex, never got round to going there.

It's been under threat of closing for years, sad to see it finally happen. Fortunately there are a few other popular circuits nearby such as Mildenhall and current host of the Banger Racing World Final, Ipswich Stadium so still some great places to see banger racing nearby. Plus the little family owned Stansted Raceway is an entertaining place to go too

Its always sad to see a local track close. I don't know how it is over there but over here the tracks do it to themselves. Different rules packages so you have a hard time racing at other tracks, even if you do well it doesn't come close to paying for what it cost to race, and some tracks are better at not playing favorites and over looking obvious cheating. It really makes it hard for some one to want to get involved and keep doing it.

Generally speaking most UK/European short tracks will support the same formulas (Brisca, 2l Stock Cars, Ministox, National Bangers etc) but some will have their own formulas as well, for example Stansted has it's Dirt Rods and Junior Bangers where as Mildenhall was the first track to do Reliant racing.

Prize money has never been huge and most racers 'sponsors' are their own businesses

As a whole banger racing has been on the decline, cars are getting harder to find and more expensive to buy and prepare which has caused numbers to shrink across the country. Even so the world final is still pulling 300+ entries every year. Back in the 1990s and early 2000's Firecracker would have had a similar number but for the last several years they have had to rely on support classes such as 2L Stock Cars and Reliants just to fill the days events
