Steam VR Motion Smoothing..Vive and Vive Pros answer to ASW?

Really can’t wait to try this..beta is already available for NVIDIA users. Too late to boot it up now but I will give an update in the morning.

I just had a quick try with my Vive (running an i5 4690k@4.4 + GTX1080).

There are some problems. The windscreen wiper motion isn't handled very well so in the rain the view out of the windscreen is a little unstable - kinda like a heat-haze shimmering that follows the wiper's motion. Enough to be a bit off putting (bare in mind that I have an iron VR stomach - it might cause nausea for those who are easily affected).

The other issue is that it doesn't always appear to be 'on' - if your frame time is >11ms but < about 15ms I don't think it's consistently active so there still some asynchronous reprojection stutter.

Having said all that, in dry conditions it's a significant step forward. The game looks and feels much more fluid and it allows you to run higher details with very little negative effects (in dry conditions). Overall I'm impressed so far, after a 10 minute trial

Blimey, Valve are on fire today. Another release has fixed the issue of the interpolation cutting in and out, and now it's active all the time. The results are seriously impressive (at least to my eyes). I no longer have to choose between stuttering or horrible low detail. I can now run with crowds on, medium MSAA, 150% super sampling, and mid to high settings for most things. It looks great and it's a massive step forward in smoothness. Not as smooth as real 90fps, and rain is still a problem (both for performance and motion interpolation artifacts), but 100% playable and very fluid. I think this a pretty big step forward for SteamVR and Vive owners.

Holy crap this is a game changer. Bumped s.s. from 1.2 to 1.3 and increased all low and medium details to high. Long Beach clear day racing was flawless. In rain there was a slight stutter twice around the track but never again once the cars spread out a bit..basically the exact same performance as before Motion Smoothing from a subjective point of view. From my hour spent with it, it seems that before with async repro whether set to ‘always on’ or not, I would notice reprojection (especially with world movement) immediately if FPS dropped below 90. Now with MS everything is perfectly smooth including world movement as long I don’t drop below 60fps. If it goes below that I experience a stutter similar to world movement reprojection of old.

I also did some driving in a thunderstorm and didn’t notice any artifacts caused by the wipers. This is what we’ve been waiting for..now to see how this looks in Elite Dangerous and DCS!!

I just tried this in Ets2 and indeed super holy ultra heap of mega crap. This game was always stuttering for me on the GT 970, especially looking to the side whilst driving, but it is butter smooth now. So smooth in fact that I now get a proper sense of speed.

Now if only Simlab would send me my P1 rig already so I can try it more properly.
I mean trucking is doable but I would just push my pedals across the room when seriously braking and manual shifting in pC2.

A small step for Steam, a big leap for VR - kind.

Not yet for Oculus. Not yet for AMD GPUs either.

It is just a matter of time though, but it isn't more than natural that Steam would choose to first beta test this tech on their own products.

I have to comment again but... with the beta update did anyone notice a much sharper image? As in less screen door effect?
