    Track day experience: Oulton park

    Date: Wednesday 17th October 2018
Location: Oulton Park (UK), Fosters circuit.
    Organiser: Supercar Drive Days (https://www.supercardrivedays.co.uk/)

My first track day since I have been VR "sim racing" in pCars.

I was naive to think that sim racing with VR would have prepared me for the sensory onslaught. I only did two laps in a 458. What an experience. For me, it was like time was going too fast.

In VR, driving that 50 seconds or so TT'ing around fosters, it is almost like you have all the time in the world to line up each corner, sweep around and power out. The real life experience felt like it was over in flash, like i had not blinked or taken a breath.

Next time I do this I will definitely do some familiarisation laps in the Golf / Clio.

Some photos from the pits while i waited:

even in a relatively slow car (like that Clio) it's a full-on assault on the senses and quite difficult to wrap your head around. Stuff is happening *all the time*, so there's no time for your brain to take a breather. On the straights the engine is screaming, the car's rattling and banging around, the scenery is flashing past. In the corners it feels like your eye balls are going to fall out the side of your head. In the braking zones you can even smell the tyres. Rinse and repeat until you come back to the pits wondering what the hell just happened.

    Awesome.

I love sim racing, but real track days are always a surprisingly different experience

Yes, I could not agree more. I came away wanting more.

I should add for anyone contemplating doing one of these events, the facilities are there for you to chop and change what you drive once. At a price.

It cost my brother 25 GBP to upgrade one of his drives from the Aston to the Lambo (LP640?, the green one!), plus another £25 to do 4x laps instead of 2x. Worth every penny.

I did a day at Mallory a few years ago in a Gallardo. Loved it, but its all very contained. They have cones to mark out breaking points, so you really cant go anywhere near the limit in anything! By the time you think your getting used to it, its back to the pits, so the conveyor belt of people can get moving again!"

    Loved it all the same!

I've done a couple of track and rally days and they drain the life out of you, never sweated so much, concentration is full on, being a MK2 Golf GTI owner I'd have ragged that around there in a heartbeat!

I did one of the BMW M4/single seater drives at Oulton a couple of years ago. It was interesting that I knew every bump and kerb intimately through driving it in VR, but the first time I hit Deer Leap at speed coming back onto the pit straight, I left my guts in my socks and thought to myself 'whoa, that doesn't happen in pCARS!'
I agree that everything seems to be that much more overwhelming when you do it for real, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that using VR in the sim made a huge difference in terms of learning the track.
I also found that in the single seater, running over kerbs at speed nearly pulled my arms off at the shoulder sockets, so I soon learned to give them a bit more respect compared to my G29 lol.
I also felt more nauseous doing it for real than using VR, which was a bit ironic, almost like my brain had got so used to VR that it was having the opposite effect to VR sickness, with my brain not expecting the movement forces.

There is still a big difference between simulating an experience and doing it for real (the very real prospect of death being one) but you can get yourself damn close these days. Looks like a fun day out you had there.
