I haven't compared the latest gen architectures, but in the past, the architecture differences were a lot more than just more cores could make up. Maybe that has changed but it would seem strange to have the two so close.

after nearly no effort of gaining power between 3rdGen and 7thGen intel and under the pressure obviously from AMD, the 8thGen was really a big step.
So i5-8600k is definitely faster then i7-7700k.
But be aware, also the prices raised. i5-800k is now in the range of i7-7700k.
i7-8xxx and especially 9x prices are far higher than the old gens i7-3x to 7x were.
So you get what you pay for. The positive thing is, that you can get something better, if you want pay for it.

    you can compare CPUmarks here

    Dear OP (Ben),

Still trying to keep you in budget.

I appreciate that you wanted to buy new, but, to be brutally honest I think you would be disappointed with the VR "end result" if you bought brand new PC that fitted your budget.

With that in mind, here's another interesting 2nd hand PC on eBay:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gaming-Vi...mjf:rk:17:pf:0

I think that this would be a very good "my first VR PC". Great motherboard, CPU and RAM combination to get you going.

You would only put a new video card in.

This machine is at 300 GBP "buy it now". At this price, you could afford to buy a "new" RTX-2070 (600 GBP) or a 2nd hand GTX-1080ti (500+ GBP) - and still be within budget.

I think you will be disappointed if you try doing VR on the cheap. PC2 especially is a monster when it comes to sapping power for VR.
I was in the same boat as you this time last year. I decided to wait until I had more money and am delighted I did.

    PS4
    Hi all.

Sorry to butt in here, but I have a similar query. I too, am looking into making the switch from PS4 to PC. However, like the OP, I haven't the time or patience to construct my own PC. I'd love the PC to have the capability of going VR as well, but it isn't absolutely essential. My budget is somewhere around £1,200 - £1,400.

I'm going to wait till Black Friday before buying anything, however, from what I've read over the last few weeks (and boy I've read a lot ) I'd really appreciate if someone could give me their thoughts on this spec of PC, because I'm thinking of trying to buy something with this spec or similar:

    Brand name CYBERPOWERPC
    Item Weight 14.1 Kg
    Product Dimensions 48 x 22.6 x 44.5 cm
    Item model number CGS480VR1259
    Color Inwin 101, Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB
    Form Factor Mid Tower
    Processor Brand Intel
    Processor Type Core i7
    Processor Speed 3.20 GHz
    Processor Count 6
    RAM Size 16 GB
    Memory Technology DDR4 SDRAM
    Computer Memory Type DDR4 SDRAM
    Hard Drive Size 240 GB
    Hard Disk Technology SSD
    Hard Drive Interface Serial ATA-600
Graphics Card Description Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Graphics Card
    Graphics RAM Type VRAM
    Graphics Card Ram Size 8.00
    Graphics Card Interface PCI-E
    Hardware Platform PC
    Operating System Windows 10 Home

Here's a link to it as well if you want a look: https://www.amazon.co.uk/CyberpowerP...%3A11416345031

Is there anything I need be wary of with something like this? Or would this be a decent buy?

    Hi!

I think that looks like a good purchase and I believe it would very much do the job for PC2.

This also looks like a very good buy.

Essentially the same system, with the newer generation nVidia RTX 2070 8GB.

Note that the above would require you to purchase your own copy of Windows 10 and install yourself. If you have never done this, please don't be put off.

Windows 10 can be purchased for less than £10.

    e.g.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WINDOWS-1....c100505.m3226

For installation, you download the Windows 10 DVD (from microsoft) on an existing PC and create your own "bootable windows 10 USB stick".

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10

In my opinion, this process is no more difficult than installing and configuring steam ;-)

I think it's decent, but before buying I would go to my local computer shop and ask them for a price for them custom building them a PC with the exact same specs for me. I think that in UK you would get a much better price than the original one, which would also allow you to go also for the 1080ti instead of the 1080, which would give another 20% or so increase in performance.

Honestly I would consider the i7 8700k. PC2 in particular is CPU hungry and mine clocked at 4.9GHz is still a bottleneck. Admittedly so is my 1080ti but all I know is I have stutter in a few corners on rainy tracks running it any less than 4.9 in VR.

Thanks mate. I looked at that Alienware Aurora R7, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't find it in the UK as cheap as you did.

Looks good though - would be great to hear how you get on once you're all set up!
