From Heise.de:
Still - this might me somewhat intriguing.Valve had already announced plans to help virtual reality and in particular its own VR glasses index with high-quality VR titles, a total of three are expected to be developed. Traditionally, Valve struggles to develop three games: Half-Life, the Half-Life episodes, Team Fortress, Portal, and Left 4 Dead all got stuck on Part 2. Fans are still upset about the Half-Life episodes, where the story was left unfinished.

I still feel that if you want your game to be a success, or at least break even on your development costs, you should not develop for VR only. But maybe I'm old-fashioned...

That's most likely not their goal. It's way more likely that they want to push their Index VR headset with the help of Half-Life's popularity.

3 new Valve games were announced, when they mentioned the Index early this year.
Now the Index is out, they are a little bit late with pushing it with unreleased games.
I think this games should have been ready for Index release

Good VR games tend to be developed for VR in the first place(or even exclusively). If it translates okay to pancake mode fine. I'd hate to think what Star Trek Bridge crew would be like if VR was an after thought...
Like 3D movies. The ones filmed in 3D are the best experience ever, but somehow almost everybody goes the cheap after effects 3D route. It's the biggest reason there are a lot of people that hate 3D(stereoscopic vision is what stereo is compared to mono in audio:you have 2 eyes and 2 ears for a reason). And it hurts stereoscopic gaming too. I'm kind of stuck with my TV because everybody stopped making them. And to top it off Nvidia has stopped packaging 3DVision in their drivers. But luckily there's a way to do it with a Reshade shader now. But it is power3D mode, so kind of artificial. Works pretty okay in ace games though(can't always be bothered to get the Vive and it's mostly the stereoscopic part I miss in std pancake anyway).

I loved Half Life 2 but I'm not going to buy a VR kit to play HL:Alyx, mainly since my gaming activities have been and are decreasing slowly over time the past years so I'm not going to put a lot of money into this (I also still don't trust they long-term effects of VR on eyesight, especially for children). If they add pancake mode I'd get the game for sure, provided that the reviews are OK.
