Car classes

I couldn't find a thread that answered my question. That is why I'm starting a new one, where all discussions about car classes can take place.

One thing I noticed is why the Lotus Type 72D Cosworth runs in a class with the Lotus 49 or 49C. In PC1, the 72D shares a class with the Lotus 78. Both decision make no sense to me because the 78 is faster than the 72D and the 72D is faster than the 49. The right choice would be to open a third class for the 72D. Any reason, why the developers don't do this?

I asked the same question in WMD, it is because the 72D did run with 49C at some point of Formula 1 while performance is somewhat closer to 49C than 78. That's why 72D is with 49C and 49 now.

If we are accurate, then the 49 has never run against the 72D only against the Lotus 72C. But I can accept this little detail ;)
