Big apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere (I have searched) but can anyone tell me what the 'double box' icons relate to in the online lobby...and why most of them (sometimes 30 / 40 or more) are empty?

Double boxes are dedicated servers, as of patch 3.0 empty servers are also visible in the server list.

Thanks...sort of guessed that's what they might be. What are the benefits of joining a dedicated server race...can the host control the racers - kicking rammers for instance?

Host can indeed kick/ban, more info about the DS here.

The double boxes with a lock on them also means session settings are locked by the server.

The dedicated servers do have the option of being visible or not if the server is empty, most seems to want to show the server if it is empty.
Only thing we need in-game now is to filter away empty servers, because it feels a lot like ads right now.
