[Fix in an Upcoming Patch] Ford Escort RS1600 racing version handling issues

Something is really wrong with the Escort RS1600 Race car as it does not handle corners at all and the smallest bump or low curb causes snap over steer and the only way to get it to handle better is to let as much air as possible out of the slicks and using other tire types makes the car even worse to the point where you cant even put your foot on the gas as the car just loses control.

For a quick test load up Brands Hatch Indy and try and race the track with slicks and then try the other tire types.

I would go into more detail but i dont think its needed with this car.

This is a real RS1600 racing on track and can we please get this type of handling

Many thanks for taking a look at it as its a great classic British racing car also that video is great and what a race that was, those guys on that track pushing so hard to to win just made for a great race with plenty of action

While I agree with your main point, that video is probably not the best choice as the rules for that series were very relaxed. My choice would be a Group 2 RS1600 such as this one

The Group 2 Escort had a nice close ratio ZF 5 speed gearbox - not the dreadful 4 speed we currently have. If Casey or Doug need any technical data I can provide some.

I hosted a 22 car race at Laguna with this escort last night. Race started at noon with summer sunshine and I forced use of default setups. Through 15mins of practice, 15mins of qualifying and the 10 lap race I never noticed any handling problems.

This guy is in the shop now. Flipping through old reference material on the FIA Historic database (new favorite website) has shed light on some things that were just off with our main reference car compared to the original. Some new rear suspension geometry, general tweakery, and a different rubber compound are feeling really strong here at the end of the day. A little more track time tomorrow morning and I'll submit the changes.

The Mexico was pretty tame compared to the RS1600

I particularly like the photos of the rear axle on pages 2 and 57-61. Getting a better look at how the original unit was located was the Aha moment today. Redesigning it to match what those trailing links do for the roll center and roll steer made everything make much more sense compared to a leaf spring + Panhard bar setup.

Many thanks for the time and work you are putting into this Casey as it will be great to race the RS1600 like it was meant to be raced
