    Rift vs Rift-S

I'm considering upgrading my Rift to a Rift-S.

Does anyone have any experience with this upgrade, what did you find?

I'm particularly interested in the PCars experience - it's really the only thing I do in VR!

I borrowed a friend's Rift S for a couple weeks when I was waiting on a part to fix the Rift I was using back then.

The S was only a little better. After spending a couple weeks with one, I decided I needed a bigger improvement if I was going to buy a whole new headset.

The resolution improvement is noticable but small, and the scren-door-effect is still there.

The colors are a step backwards from the Rift. (To be fair, I don't think anything has come along that's better than the OLED's in the Rift when it comes to color)

The refresh rate on the S is lower too. 80 vs 90. It did not bother me, but it's also something to consider.

I was also not a fan of the headband comfort on the S. This probably varies from one person to the next though.

The 1080Ti in your sig can run a Reverb on low-ish settings and the Reverb (G1 or G2) is a big step up from the Rift. A friend of mine has an Index, and while not as sharp as the Reverb, it's pretty close, and a little easier to run vs the Reverb.

I personally prefferd the sharp but plain look of the Reveb with PC2 on low settings, but it's something to consider. If you want to keep your current eye-candy settings and stick with your 1080ti, the S is probably your only upgrade option. (I think I still had to turn down a setting or two vs my Rift when I was running a 1080ti.)

Thanks for the quality feedback, appreciated. Current VR rig is the 2nd one in my signature, the X299/3080 setup.

Did you find that you could improve graphics settings and still maintain the 80 FPS?

The G2 interests me, but it's a little on the expensive side - plus availability is a problem over here in the UK.

The S was a tiny bit harder to run at 80fps than the Rift was at 90.

I would consider getting a G1. Refurbs are going for $400-ish now. My 3080 can run medium-ish settings well on my G1.

Edit: if you go the G1 route, there is a learning curve for WMR and steam VR. It's easy once you get it figured out, but it's different than the Oculus eco system.

    Thanks again.

The learning curve is a particularly valid point. For all it's faults I am used to the Oculus way now.

My 2p... I did this upgrade when the Rift S came out, and although it was partly driven by the fact I'd managed to collect a few dings on the Rift that was making it feel less than secure, the resolution bump and (from my point of view) extra comfort of the halo strap made it a worthwhile upgrade in and of itself. That said, I'm not really framerate sensitive so the drop to 80Hz was a non-issue for me. Screen door effect is still there but I would say noticeably reduced.

The only reason I would hesitate to do the Rift S upgrade now is that it's going to be end of life very soon (that's why it's relatively cheap right now) and Facebook are putting everything behind the Quest lineup. If you really want to stay in the Oculus ecosystem you might be better off in terms of future proofing going for a Quest 2, plus you get even more resolution (screen door is virtually gone) and you're back at 90Hz if that's an issue. The only problem might be the strap (some people like the stock strap, others hate it - I found it ok, but upgraded to the deluxe battery strap as I do a fair bit of stuff on the Quest itself and it is very comfy).

Edit - meant to add, performance of Quest via Link these days is basically indistinguishable from a "regular" Rift headset.

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of detail I was looking for. I really appreciate you stopping by. Consider that the end to the "Buying a Rift-S" discussion.

To be honest, i had not considered the Quest 2 at all. I thought it was just a standalone device.

    Interesting, very interesting indeed.

Now that I've looked at it hopefully amazon will start making silly offers.

A recent review of the quest 2 with pCars2.

At one point the review states "Night and day difference". Interesting. Very interesting.

One other thing I should have mentioned about Link - for the best experience you will need a decent USB3 cable. There is an official, very high quality Oculus Link cable but it's also very expensive - I've got one of those now, but initially I used the Anker cable that Oculus recommended as the one they used during testing. Amazon link is https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - it works perfectly well, the only downsides are it's a little short for roomscale VR (not an issue if you're only using it for simracing), and it's not an L-shaped plug on the USB-C end which isn't ideal (it sticks out of the headset - however if you use the provided velcro strap to secure it to the headstrap it's fine).

I'm keeping a keen eye on this too. The Quest 2 pops up fairly regularly on a large retailer's ebay 'clearance' store for damaged box goods, at approx. £250. For that money, plus the Anker cable, it's a no-brainer. I'll be moving to it from the DK2, so the step up is going to be something like the step up I had from my GTX 980 to RTX 3080 .
