If you haven't seen this yet, you should check this out. While it's not a full racing simulation, it does have some realistic aspects to the driving (i.e. it's not Super Sprint). It's still in Early Access and they are also working on console porting, but it's something to consider for some fun without going into full on "sim racer mode".

Any relation to this old classic? 2002-ish I think, with fuel & tyre wear, pitstops, damage. You could design a track in MS Paint and get racing if I remember rightly.

No connection other than the gameplay being similar (however they both related back the '80's classics).

These little games are awesome and can certainly be a lot of fun. The handling is a bit more sophisticated than the word 'arcade' might suggest.
Art of Rally is a similar game, the attention to detail and the style are absolutely fantastic.

Circuit Superstars just put out a pretty big update. They have also added a Sprint Car (not sure why this guy didn't add any AI to his video but they are there as I did race today):
