Unhandled exception error at startup

After months of happily playing Project Cars, I suddenly get the following message on startup:

Unhandled exception trapped. EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at0x40 ea 41c9. Reading from Address 0x0000000. Thread 0x00001a50 (what appears after 0x0000 changes with every new attempt to start this game)

Reverting to a system restore point did not make a difference.

I’m running Steam in Windows bootcamp on an iMac and use a xbox one elite version 2.

I do not play online and I don't chat.

Silly question perhaps but except for reverting to a system restore point did you try to verify system files on Steam? It is a simple solution that works in most cases but is often overlooked. I know because it also happened to me a couple of times. I was searching for complicated solutions instead of just verifying my game files.
